Check It Out

I'm not totally feeling this character....and I've been waiting for a non-glamorous character out of tetsuya for a while...but this one sorta erks me.

there's been like 2 black characters in ff.

we either get like some cornrowed thug (in ffvii ac) or now a disco soulman/pirate-cowboy? lol...

can;t we put a hot ripped black guy in? lol....YUM!

i know i;m making some serious assumption and statements...and probably sound very shallow....but it just seems like every white character in final fantasy is stunningly young looking...with perfect features and bodies.

this design just seems like what japanese picture black people as...frumpy..nutty professor haired...and 70's .it;s kind of offensive to me almost.

tho i;m certain many of you will dislike my request for a hot modern looking black guy, and call it very narrow minded. but just consider my thoughts here.

i really wanna clarify that I don;t have any issue with this character's existence. I just have this deep sense that this will be the only black representation in the game. And I just really want MORE. who knows ...maybe we will go to his village or city and meet his whole kick ass family and neighbors....but did that happen in ffvii? heck no. go to barret's town and u get a bunch of cracked out whiteys lol. whats the deal

whether u like it or not...this look is stereotypical...and it just seems like a very narrow eye designed this look.

if nomura is really the visionary i believe he is....he should be able to produce something truly unique.

the hair is too old school. people don't wear their hair like that anymore.

every other character gets to be like runway models, but the black guy gets to look goofy.

this character does;t look original to me....or ballsy...he looks put in just to fill a requirement.

it would be SO bad ass to put in a sexy ...tall muscular...chocolate god lol .

and ya know..i don;t want all the main characters to be like runway models...the more variety the better. I want varying ages, races, body types, and even animal or or cartoon based characters. but the cliche look here really strikes a nerve in me.

just look at it this way. if ff was primarily filled with black characters for the past 20 years and the two white people we're a hillbilly in overalls and a lady with poofy 80's hair, wouldn't white people feel slightly stereotyped as well?

i think this is a very thoughtless design.

anyways not trying to upset anyone....it;s just my initial thoughts. and i;m interested to hear yours.

(btw...i totally dig the baby chocobo companion and can't wait to see how it's worked in.)

Solution: Stop thinking Nomura is a visionary. He isn't.

Yeah, this isn't Updates, if it's meant to ask whether or not people find him offensive. Can we see this topic moved to te FFXIII forum?

I'm not offended so much as embarrassed and annoyed. Japanese people seem to have a hard time picturing a black person they can take seriously. I've shown him to a bunch of my friends and none of them really see anything wrong with it.

Which is sad since I see black dudes in suits here working for respectable companies all the time, but what people remember are all the ones who come here to open up shoddy ripoff hiphop clothing stores in Harajuku and hang out with each other while trying to pick up Japanese girls. ~_~;

The other stereotypical 'black person' over here is a dangerous man who you'll get in trouble if you hang out with. My host mother /constantly/ warns me about places where black people hang out. =_=;

Also, that chocobo chick makes me think of black people and chicken, in the racist way. ~_~; I predict crack images with Sazh/Fazh/not sure advertising Kentucky Fried Chocobo.

I mainly logged in just to quote this bit.

Guilty of laughing out loud during class.

Anyway, personally I don't know what to think of this character - along with the rest of the current XIII characters, I'm just unimpressed with him atm. What BC said in regards to this makes sense and doesn't surprise me; I doubt the japanese have any notions of all the heavy black/racist history we have, especially the whole racial stereotyping/generalizations in the media and its censoring. We have a lot to look back on, all this weight naturally still weighs heavy on some people's shoulder and is still a rather sensitive subject to those who are concerned. Though personally I think some people have a tendancy to abuse the whole "this is racial stereotyping!" bollocks. Reminds me of how the Princess in the upcoming Disney movie "The Princess and the Frog", who is black, was initially supposed to be a servant for some rich white chump but apparently some tarts 'deemed that racist' and hence it was changed. /^:

I think what people need to understand is that the Japanese don't have the same black/racism history as we do, they don't have any of this reference to look back on, they don't have those weights we do and so hence, they're not as scrupulous and paranoid as the West is in regards to depiction of black people.

I thought that there was a reason for the Chocobo...!

Erk. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if fanart for him pops up regarding that KFC thing.
