V-Jump: New Final Fantasy XIII Character Revealed

[Kitmitsu]

The latest issue of V-Jump has been released and with it comes a scan of a brand new Final Fantasy XIII character. He isn't a character that was revealed at Jump Festa. In the scan we can see him fighting in a battle with Lightning which is the first time we've seen a battle with more than one character in the party. He's also supposed to be a starting party member meaning you'll be able to use him at the beginning of the game. BlankChocobo has translated more details from the scan:

"His name is サッズ・カッツロイ 'Sazh Katzroy', and he is a middle aged man. He dual wields pistols, has a baby chocobo, is a gentle hearted person easily moved to tears, possesses good judgment and a sense of social responsibility.

Every character in this game has a bad design. What keeps my interest up in this game, is the world itself. I hope I'll like the characters once I see them in action. I do like not the looks of this character but the description of him sounds interesting.

And he has a little chocobo, makes me think of Drebin and his junkey monkey.

Crystal Tools is a PC based engine which can be ported to other platforms. It doesn't mean they're designing it for PC but they're using it as a development platform rather than using devkits.

Some of you need to keep on the ball and read the updates. Blank has confirmed thus far with her experience and knowledge from Jump Festa that this new unveiled character IS NOT the orange afro dude. Stop putting the two together. The only reason why Blank can't provide solid evidence at the moment is because she got her camera confisticated at the event when there was a no photography policy and had her pictures deleted, otherwise she would provide them.

I tried to enlarge the pic to read the captions in on of the in-game screenshot, but all I was able to get was that he talks to his pet/baby chocobo, and when he does he addresses himself as "Daddy" in a 3rd person reference to the baby chocobo. So far, I was able to decipher it as him saying "Daddy is blahblahblah". I'm gonna go to my local japanese store and see if I can pick up this issue of V-jump, if someone can provide the issue or month of the magazine instead of saying "the latest" it'd help so I can ask the people who work there when and if they will get it. Thanks.

None of the above makes sense. How can you even compare an alien with a black man? Star Wars has a setting with many different races across the universe. Seeing another race than humans in those movies makes perfect sense.

What a bad design! Despite the futuristic theme of the game, the Afro design is like: going back to the past. I just hope that his background/story explains why he's got that style. Somehow, I don't feel that the afro belongs to XIII futuristic world. Just a personal opinion. :)

I tried to enlarge the pic to read the captions in on of the in-game screenshot, but all I was able to get was that he talks to his pet/baby chocobo, and when he does he addresses himself as "Daddy" in a 3rd person reference to the baby chocobo. So far, I was able to decipher it as him saying "Daddy is blahblahblah".

Actually, that was at TGS with my camera. XD

But the Daddy talk doesn't help make him seem like a character I could take seriously. =/ For some reason that just adds to the stereotype-ness.

Anyway, the chocobo sure doesn't look like the little odd shaped chocobos I'm used to seeing. It looks like a normal chick I could find on a farm. It's interesting that SE decided to show pictures of a new charater before showing him in a trailer though. I'd really like to see the other charaters already. I'm not too pleased with the designs so far either... Lighting and Vanille are the only two that seem pleasing to me. The rest are just okay. This guy though, it's just bad.

- How can we make a quirky, interesting chocobo breeder? Well, he can treat it like a family member, love it unconditionally and excessively, and talk to it. Sounds like he'd fill one of our goals for FNC -- making more idiosyncratic, meaningful characters.
- Where would a quirky, unexpected character keep a baby chocobo? HIS HAIR! Genius, Nomura! Absolute genius! Asspats all around.
- What kind of hairstyle is nest-like? An afro, you say? Alrighty, we'll make him black, because we need black characters to appeal to a western audience and because "afro = nest of hair = bird's nest = a bird lives on his head."

Nobody is racist, nobody is trying to make fun of blacks, they were simply having fun with a character, as I or anyone else with any artistic merit would do. It's the same type of play people use with literature. Instead of wordplay, artists play with imagery. Maybe they even considered that some people would take offense and made a more serious black character (the orange-haired guy) to offset our new friend Sazh Katzroy.

He looks just as absurd as all of the other characters.

He's got a friendly face, more personality than the HAPPY GRIN DESU Snow and Oerba (I refuse to call her Vanilla), and a passion for something--his chocobo. For those reasons, if you ask me, he's the most interesting character out of the four. Don't count your chocobos before they hatch, kids. Before you get offended, take a deep breath, think, and realize there is too much money in a project like this to just flippantly offend one racial group or another.

I don't mind comic relief characters, as long as they're done right. If they're not done right, you can pretty much guarantee they won't be in my used party. And that afro is not done right...

I just don't see 'good judgement' anywhere. If I did, I wouldn't be so annoyed. I'm sure there must be a lot of Japanese here who have a reasonable idea of African American or any other kind of black culture, but I don't think they're the normal Japanese.

I have pretty much the exact same opinions as him, except that I know there are Japanese prejudiced against black people. My host mom is afraid of them, and yet she lets me (white girl) live in her house, so it's not just a foreigner thing.

I imagine younger people (and companies aiming their games at younger people) probably have had more exposure to them and therefore probably don't have the same extreme views, but I was geniunely surprised by how much my host mom doesn't trust black people. I mean, she made us get off a train when a Nigerian started talking to me to get away from him.

Don't think so =). People are people meant that people are each individuals. Of course I wouldn't be saying that people are all the same or act the same or whatever. I just said what I said because I wish that different races would get over their race. I'm a white guy. But I don't want to place any identity in the fact that I was born white. My identity comes from the things i choose. It's annoying to meet people of any race who feel some intrinsic identity with their race. To me racism has two sides; those who hate or discriminate against race and those who cling to their race as a form of identity.

edit: just read my post and yeah, "marginalized while at the same time maintaining their identity as being different from others." should have been "racially marginalized" and "racial identity" all in all it is a bad misleading sentence. =(

I for one think the new guy is cool. Not because he's black, but because he seems like a cool, kind-hearted, and good humored guy who just happens to be black.

Jeez, I'm so sick of racism popping up in every topic. Even fantasy games with fictional races are not safe! >_<

Would it be better if he looked like Steve Urkel? Just accept the character for what he is and stop pretending that he represents the entire black population.
