Final Fantasy XIII battle system question.

Exactly how does the the battle system work, will it be a pause action unpause thing, or more of a button press quick screen like thing were you map out 2 or 3 attacks and then quick screen to select more advanced attacks and combos.

As for the battle system, what is there to know? Press buttons --> Kill stuff --> Receive prizes --> Repeat.
