Importing FFXIII

Way back when the PS3 was first being released I remember that claim being made that PS3 games would be region-free, and therefore it wouldn't be necessary to do any kind of modding to play an imported Japanese PS3 game on your US PS3. Is this actually the case? I've heard basically nothing on the subject since then, and even if I try to google it all the references I find date back to 2006 or earlier...

I've only had my PS3 for about 6 months now (did manage to pick one up before they eliminated backwards compatibility for good, though), so I haven't really had a big need to pick up any import games to try it out. However, FFXIII is one title which makes me seriously think about importing it, especially given the potential delay of a US release to work on the 360 port. Being able to play import games without modding would be fantastic if it's actually true.

Same, I'm imported some games from the US and they work perfectly. I don't know what happens if you use an SD TV though, some games might show as black and white. Pretty much any HDTV will look the way it should though.

Thanks for the confirmation. Sorry if my question seemed dumb, but I just hadn't heard anything definitive. I assume the SD TV issues you mentioned are a PAL vs. NTSC problem? I have an HDTV anyway so that shouldn't be an issue.

Reva, there are a number of websites that sell import games. I haven't seen any advertising FFXIII yet, but that's not too surprising since it doesn't even have a release date in Japan yet. Wait for the release date to be announced and then go looking. I might just try amazon.co.jp too, but I'm not sure what the shipping will be like...

I just checked amazon.co.jp shipping to the UK and it is bullshizz. I think to America is more reasonable, but if you're out in Europe, find another site. They were asking about a hundred bucks to ship two magazines to the UK. >_>
