Endless E-Entertainment has once again provided some very good quality scans from Famitsu China which contain lots of good screenshots of Final Fantasy XIII which you can actually see this time. Enjoy the sexiness. Merry Chistmas.

Pretty much but in Chinese. Famitsu release their magazines in China to. Anyway they're much better quality. The Chinese know how to scan things :aldo:.

It's called Weekly Famitsu Hong Kong, not Famitsu China. It isn't released in China at all.

Edit: Lelouch, I posted non-tagged ones here: http://finalfantasy-xiii.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5879 I don't know why Kitmitsu posted tagged ones on the main page, but whatever :P

Really? I knew it wasn't called "Famitsu China" but that's the name we gave the last lot of scans from this site and as we never found out the name, we might as well have some continuity. I can't see any mention of Hong Kong on there myself.

Well, if you want continuity, use Weekly Famitsu Hong Kong and then make a note saying that previous use of Famitsu China is incorrect. Here's proof of the title:

Well I didn't know the name of the magazine when I posted the new lot of scans either. As I didn't know it, I just named them Famitsu China. I'd already finished the article when you posted the Hong Kong thing so I couldn't have known beforehand. Every English I've seen with these have made the same mistake. I'll edit the article.

^It's because of 2 reasons.

A) Jump Festa featured 2 versions of XIII trailer which were new and the other two were old trailers from TGS.

B) Demo screens

i'll do some bits and pieces if you guys really want a translation. a full translation will take some days. @_@

Nex
Dec 26 2008, 05:44 PM
Can't wait for the translation, this is my own interpretation-

The ATB fills up in real time. There are three segments to the ATB bar, they are the Actions. Right now there are a maximum of three actions. When the ATB bar has filled up one of those Actions, you can use one of the commands. Each command has a Cost, which you can see on the right. Most of them have a 1, meaning it will take 1 Action to use. One of them has a 3, meaning it would take up all 3 Actions to use that technique.

This scan demonstrates all that-

http://finalfantasy-xiii.net/media/scans/famitsu/100.jpg

All of that I'm pretty much 100% sure on. These are some other theories-

The bar on the top right has to do with the limit break. You can see in the translation under it that they mention "overclock", "break" and "limit break". I'm guessing the "chain" is how many attacks in a row you've done, the more in a row meaning the percentage is higher and the limit bar will fill up faster. When it says "break", you can use Overclock.

The triangle button can be used to switch between gun and blade mode with Lightning's weapon. It doesn't have a Cost, meaning you can switch without wasting any Actions. When you switch between the modes the command menu changes (you can see a faded menu to the left of the real one, that pops up when you press triangle).

As demonstrated by this scan - http://finalfantasy-xiii.net/media/scans/famitsu/99.jpg (down the bottom left), that bar next to Lightning's name is not her health. Then number on the right of the bar is. The bar might be something to do with the ATB, I don't know.

YES. finally done.

I didn't translate every single thing, just what is new and what people would want to know.
Apologies in advance for any bad translation. I haven't done this for a long long time. So don't assume what I write here is all true or official. There may be mistakes in interpretation along the way.

Oh and typos, spelling errors, etc. I'm doing it on notepad. I'll beta it after I'm done with all the translation.

Storyline/Character

Pg25
(rest that I didn't translate is what is already know about Cocoon, Pulse, infected prisoners, etc)
- Famitsu used Vanille as her name, so I guess it's decided that Vanille is a name?
- Third Lusi (Snow and Lightning are both Lusi)
- Vanille = cheerful+optimistic girl, however carries with her a cruel destiny/heavy burden.
-bottom right hand(with the small pic)
comments about Vanille's costume, which seems pretty primitive with the beads and fur clothing. Contrast with Lightning and Snow's clothing, seems to have a different culture than the rest of the people in Cocoon.
Weird weapon? Seems to be usually carried around, hanging by her waist.
- bottom:
"The thirteenth day after waking up, the end of the world has started." - Vanille in JF09 Trailer
Content of trailer :
lightning and mysterious man (i'm assuming the white/yellow guy on page 26) are looking for a certain something, while saving the "infected" prisoners with Snow and co.(who are the anti-Holy government group. sounds familiar?). Together they fight the Holy Government and Vanille is involved in the battle

Pg26
Heading: Won't Let Any Traitors off the hook. The mighty and powerful Holy Government's Power
- right hand side, below the Judge-looking character.
The soldiers of the military are called PSICOM soldiers and they have trained military beasts with them. Judging from their dialouge, they are pretty confident of the Holy Government's power. Will they be after Lightning?!
From the picture(claws), it can be seen that the claws of the beasts have been altered and mechanised, hence showing the high level of technology that the Holy Government military has.

- left side.
Together with a mysterious man, Lighting stands in front of the "foreign matter" (I seriously have no idea what it is, hence I'm doing a direct translation) being held in by beams of light. Lightning is here for this "foreign matter", or more precisely to find a ceratin "something" inside it. According to information already released, we know that this foreign matter can change water, ice into the power of the Crystal. What is Lightning's reason for find the foreign matter?

Next to Lightning, with his back towards the camera, stands the mysterious man. He seems to have know Lightning for a very long time. Maybe way back in her days in the military?

- bottom
An rather interesting part in the trailer is the active roles the anti-Holy Government members adopt while fighting with Snow. Members seem to be young, including a young and energetic youth (I assum Googles Boy), an Asian, black-haired beauty(Asian girl) and a guy with a Red Indianish hair style. (Afro Man?!)

(note: Famitsu Hongkong said Red Indian, as compared to the widely rumored Afro,so I'm not too sure which is the correct one. Then again, maybe the editors for Famitsu Hongkong mistook Afro for Red Indianish hair style?!)

Pg27
-top right box.
Top Heading: From still to action... The Sudden Fierce Battle!
The acton of Lightning tapping her left fingers is the signal for an exhilarating battle. By rubbing the mechanism on herthumb, Lightning's body will be surrounded by a blue-colored lightning, obtaining the ability to ability to manipulate gravity.
Besides that, the 2 pictures on the top of this page (the 2 inside the box I assume?) are screenshots from the CG movies, while the 2 pictures at the bottom of this page are taken from real gameplay. After comparison, we believe that the players would realise that the difference in the quality of both is so minute that it's amazing.

Bottom Heading: Mechanism on Left Thumb
Although Lightning can freely manipulate gravity, this ability is not permanent. It is activated only when she rubs the mechanism on her left thumb. Since this is an ability made possible with machinery, it could very well be an end product of military technology research.

-Keyword Box: Coccon and Pulse.
will tranlsate later, info we already know.

- Bottom half (including bottom box and right heading)
Right Heading: Talking about her past with a resolute eyes, no hesitation detected in her expression.
Caption for Pic below: Lightning turning around to tell someone about her departure from the military. Succinct words, no regret or relunctance from her expression.

Left Heading : Lightning's reason for departure from the Holy Government military?
With regards of information on Lightning, it is already known that she is an ex-soldier, but whey did she leave the military. This is not yet known. In the right picture, she explains that she left the military out of her own free will, and not as a result of dismissal or being driven out.
Now on the opposing side of the Holy Government military, what happened in their past? This is still full of mystery.

- Bottom
Scenes significant to the storyline kept appearing in the trailer. Out of which, the most impactful one was when Lightning, Snow and Vanille saw the "Heteroptics" together. As the image faded away, we can see the shape of the Brand (his tatoo) on Snow's arm.

Battle System

Pg28
Shall skip the black words at the very top. Just an intro into the section.

-Top Half (Box and Right Heading.)
Black Right Heading : Waving a Solid Hit Returning the Monsters To Hell (ok this is cheesy, I know, can't think of anything else at 3am in the morning.)

Left Heading: The Calm, Butchering Cold Sword.
In a battle with a party of Geparuto (Direct romanji from the Japanese Katakana, the hound like monsters) and PSICOM soldiers, Lightning displays a smooth and elegant swordsmanship. When in battle, the camera agnle will change/switch/rotate according to the commandes input, to ensure the perfect simulation of a speedy battle.

- Bottom half
Left Heading: Created using the Holy Government military's techonolgy, the power of this huge, ominous weapon is pretty shocking.
This huge weapon, made of metalloid, is called Manasuuiso (Again direct romanji from the Japanese Katakana, may have some mistakes.). From the beams of light at the bottom of the machine, it can be decuded that this weapon is also in charge of patrol and guard duty. From the current pictures being released, it can only be seen that it can use laser attacks of some sort. However, the spikes lined up on the top of the machine and the circular blades on the left, it is believed that the weapon would have a variety of attack options.
Being able to confront such a terror weapon, with just a human body, it seems that Lightning's fighting strength is just as unimaginable.

Still in the box, bottom part
Left Heading: Counterattack?!
Center Heading: Weapon Mode Change! (refering to Lightning's weapon)
Details will be give later, but Lightning's weapon mode can be changed from sword mode to gun mode and vice versa, from the commands being input.
Right Heading: Multiple parts?
One attack, but having multiple damage values? It is not known whether the enemy is designed to have mulitple parts or that there are mulitple hits?

- Bottom bar.
"Sera" is a key name that appears numerous times in the trailers. As Lightning and co. journeys from Cocoon to Pulse, there seems to have a huge incident involving "Sera". And Lightning seems to be extremely angry and berated Snow for not protecting "Sera", punching him. What/Who is "Sera"?

Pg29
Black Left Heading: Fluently drawing out the resplendent trails of an elegant sword dance, slashing every enemy who stands in the way! (I really hate how they describe this kinda things, it's nice in chinese, but simply not nice to translate. -.-)

- Right Box
Heading: Physical attacks and magic, smooth switches with situation.
Lightning not only uses physical attacks, but she can also use magic to battle. In her situation, she uses her right hand for physical attacks and left hand for magic. As shown in the bottom left picture, she can also use Healing magic, such as Cure, to heal herself during a pinch. (In case you guys can't see, it's the bottom left picture. The last command on the left hand side. the one that's not really blue.)
Use sword to attack all enemies?
"Attack" option displayed physical attacks, causing mulitple damage values. Can it be that we can attack multiple enemies, if they come close enough?

- Bottom Left Pic (The Cure Picture)
Heading: Use backstep to evade and counterattack!

-Bottom Bar
The latest trailer not only shows Lightning's battles, but also battles of Snow and 2 of the members of the anti-Holy Government group, as a party of 3. When in battle, we can see that the other party members doing chain attacks on the enemy, as he is being thrown up by the controlled character. Besides that the trailer also revealed that we can freely choose which character to control.

Pg30 (Killer Page)

-Top Left Corner. (From left to right)
Heading: Store all your commands first, then execute in one go!
The biggest feature of the battle system in FFXIII is perhaps the "Store all commands, execute at one go!" system. When issuing commands, the character's actions will change according to the type of commands stored, or the sequence of the commands. For example, the actions associated with "Attack, Attack, Fira" will be different from those with "Attack, Fira, Attack". Furthermroe, if you add the command "Urraba" (ok I'm pretty sure I got this wrong, but the chinese can't be translated either.) to the list, the character will be able to do beautiful chain attacks in air. Finding out the most efficient combinations would definitely be endless fun. Furthermore, in the pictures released this time, the maximum number of commands being stored is 3, but there may still be chances for it to increase or decrease?
Right Section
Heading: Empty during Enemies' Turn (To Attack)
In the middle of the "Command List" and "Instant Commands" bars, there will be a meter, separating these 2 types of commadns. This meter seems to display the current command being executed. Hence the meter will be empty during the enemies' turn to attack.
(Ok, I stared at the picture for 3minutes, then I realised it's the white line ABOVE the commandline, with white words on the line itself. why in the WORLD did they call it a meter?!)

- Bottom Left
Heading: All commands use Cost = No MP?!
There's a number displayed on the right of every command, showing the number of Cost required to store the commands.
For example, when the maximum commands for the commands list bar is 3, players can store up to 3 of any commands which only requires 1 Cost (Attack/Fire). However for some commands, such as Firaga, which requires 3 Cost, can only be stored once in one turn.
There seems to be no indication to anything similar to the MP system at this point of time. Maybe in FFXIII, using magic and attacks will not be dependent on things such as the MP, but rather on the new system of Costs?!

Battle Menu Layering (The chinese says layers, but you can view it as levels.)
If we observe the released screenshots of the battle systems, we'll realise that there is a menu for "Combat" and related commands and a menu for "Skills/Technique" and related commands. The battle menus are organised in layers, probably for the benefit of the players freely switch through the menus, while selecting the combat choices.
However, why are the Fire magic and Healing magic put on the first layer and independent from the other related magic commands? The reason for such a layout is unknown. Is it because players can freely organise the menus and options or maybe it is because of different layouts due to different characters?

-Bottom Right
Heading: The Evolved ATB (Active Time Battle)!
Sub-heading: Icons to indicate the controlled character!
ATB (Active Time Battle) is a battle system whereby the gauge will be filled gradually, and players can issue out commands when complete. FFXIII will also inherit this representative system of the Final Fantasy Series. However, there will also be major but interesting differences. That is, the players can freely control the depletion of the ATB gauge. This is achieved through the system described earlier, whereby players can store pre-defined commands and execute them at one go. If players store up to the maximum number of commands allowed (3 currently), then the gauge will be depleted at once. However, if players execute only one command each time, then the gauge will deplete slower and the time between the current and next turn of action will be shortened. If this system is used effiecently, you hold the key to battle victories!

-Bottom
We know that Lightning uses Fira and Firaga, in the screenshots snow. In the trailer, Snow is also shown to be using Blizzard and Blizzaga in battle. Maybe Snow's name is representative of his ability? In addition, Snow does not use any weapons, he uses physical combat/wrestling skills. (aka melee)

Pg31
- Top Right
Heading: Chain and Bonus, and an unknown meter
On the top right of the screenshot, we can see a meter, and the words "Chain" and "Bonus". "Chain" would probably mean multiple attacks chained together (chain attacks). On the other hand, the purposes of the "Bonus" and the unknown meter are yet to be detemined.
In the earlier releases of the gameplay, the word "Overclock" is in place, instead of the meter and "Bonus". Deducing from this, maybe the "Bonus" and meter have something to do with the "Overclock" system? If the percentage for the "Bonus" goes over 100%, there may be the possibility of strengthening a certain skill? To know more about the system, please stay tuned for more reports in the future.

Break
Sometimes, in place of the "Chain" word, there will be a "Break" there. When we talk about Break, we would immediately refer to the Limit Break system in FFVII. However, the "Break" in FFXIII is placed in a somewhat hidden area, hence it may just simple mean "Chain Break"?

- Underneath the top right section
Heading: Viewing the enemies' name and HP?!
In released screenshots, the enemies' names and HP are displayed all the time. In previous games in the series, we need "Libra", "Penetrate" to view the details of enemies. But it seems that there is no need for those in FFXIII anymore?

Heading below this section: Whipping out her sword from her waist, hitting enemies in the way in a lightning slash!

- Bottom Left
Heading: Viewing Enemies Icons to Get into Battle.
In FFXIII, players can see the enemies on the map itself and go into battle, by touching the enemies. Furthermore, it will be seamless transistion from touching the enemy to the start of the battle. Hence it will make the whole battle more smooth and full of speed and rhythmn. Players can also choose to proceed while avoiding enemies.

- Bottom
In the trailer, it also revealed Snow summoning Shiva. The Shiva sisters transform into a motorcycle as Shiva rides on it, while fighting a battle. This form of Shiva is totally different from the other forms in the whole Final Fantasy Series. What are some of the other summoning for the other summons?

DONE!

@Lelouch I'm pretty sure the end of the world meant the cocoon+Holy government setting. haha. yep, the Famitsu mag did say it was the most impactful line in the whole trailer.

@Toroca it's chinese, you really ARE tired, huh? 0_0. least i could do, since I'm bilingual and my jap sucks. haha.

@Kitmitsu yep, I'm done with the characters info. time for the battle system part. which is going to be hell,i think @_@

@Nex I assume you're talking about pg30, right hand side? you're right actually, it is the evolved ATB bar. though the part about the Break is slightly wrong. but i'll get to there in the translation.

I just don't get why there seem to be two ATB bars. There's the one above the commands and the one next to Lightning's name. Hopefully your translation can explain it, keep up the good work. =D

I've heard a couple of times it's seamless when you touch an enemy now, that's awesome. =D What I really want to know is if battles take place on the same map, or if you're taken to a little circular arena like in Star Ocean and games like that.

Seamless could technically mean there's just no loading time, but I'm really hoping battles take place in the same place as you hit the enemies.

@Nex there's actually not 2 ATB bar. the one next to Lightning's name is the ATB bar. the one above the command, is the Command List, where you store the predefined commands, that's why you notice there's only 3 segments. you can only store up to 3 commands for the time being.

they didn't really mention much about the seamless battle part, except for the fact it is seamless. but it's still wow, nonetheless. XD

but. sorry to disappoint you and the others. I'm left with pg 30-31, which is probably the gist of the battle system. but I've gotta sleep now. it's like 4:10am over here. I'll complete the rest tomorrow. I spent a huge time on pg 30... until I realise this is a HONGKONG magazine, so you can't read parts of it as Chinese. Have to read it in Cantonese to understand. i'm pretty much Zzzz now.

it'll take some time to decipher it out, since I'm not very fluent in Cantonese.

digi out.

Oh well, you've done a great job. Sleep well mate. :D

I'm still trying to get my head around it all. >_< If the bar above the commands isn't an ATB, then how come one of the segments seems to be partly filled on pg28? How do the three segments in the bar fill up so you can use more commands?

It says the space will be "empty during the enemies turn". That's really weird, no FF battle system has an "enemies turn". If you attack when your ATB fills up, there should be no predefined time as an "enemies turn". >_< I don't understand.

The command list also seems to change when the enemy is attacking. The Bonus Bar up the top right is gone and there are only three commands down the bottom left.

Ok I'm WAY too confused, I'm going to have to stop theorising before my head explodes. I was so sure I understood as well. :'( I'll just try to put it together one more time.

When your ATB fills up, a segment is added to the Action bar, and you can then use a command. If you've waited long enough for there to be more than one segment on the Action bar, you can store another command in a row. But...... if that were true than they could just use the Action bar as an ATB and not have the bar next to Lightning's name at all. >_< I give up.

@Nex I assume you're talking about pg30, right hand side? you're right actually, it is the evolved ATB bar. though the part about the Break is slightly wrong. but i'll get to there in the translation.

and seriously, after reading the magazine, the battle system seems REALLY awesome. and apparently it's seamless transitions between map and the battlefield. You just go straight into battle, after touching an enemy.

Yeah... thought so xD very interesting though and the battle system really is a dream come true. ;P

I'm not even gonna try to understand the battle system yet. It'll make more sense if I played the demo or the game. All the info is very interesting though!

Good translation digi! Thanks. Now if only Square would let some pictures of that new trailer out! We better not have to wait til March to see. :nag:

This Games Battle System Will Take Much More Skill Then The Old Turn Based FFVII Type.

Hope Its Not Too Hard And Technical.

Edit: Reading The Person Comment Above This, Id Think If You Didn't Have To Move In The Battle IT'd Make It A Bit Easier.

This IS My Opinion And I Like The Old Turn Based Better.
Thats How Final Fantasy Was Recognized As pretty Much..

They Could Make It, OR Break It.

Lets See...

As said in the mag, the bar above the commands isn't an ATB, it's to indicate the number of commands that you have stored. Hence 3 segments for 3 commands. Each commands take up one segment. So if you store "Attack, Fire, Attack", there 3 commands fill up the command list bar. my bad, yest, i wrote commandline. lol -.- my brain was fried.

At the moment, there's only 3 segments for the commands list bar. However, it is likely that the number of segments will increase to accommodate the storing of more commands.

Next is the so-called empty meter, which I prefer to call it a separator line. I believe that is the white line located above the command list bar. Empty meaning that there will be no words on it, I suppose. My bad for translating it wrong. It should have been the "enemies' turn to attack". When your ATB becomes empty, it's technically the opponent's turn to attack, hence the "enemies' turn to attack".

I think some stuff will be clearer, once I finish translating the ATB bar part, which I'll be doing now! XD

@Thula
I don't if it's the Japanese who got it mixed up or the Chinese who got it mixed up. @_@
but oh well, we do know he has a not-so-normal hairstyle. XD

@Moklin
I wouldn't know, since I don't have the demo yet. XD but I suppose you won't be able to control the running of the characters in the battle itself. But the actions of the characters would definitely include running and jumping into the air, depend on the commands you issued out.
But since this is Final Fantasy, a RPG, I seriously don't suppose you can run in the battle and start slashing enemies, it would be an ACT then?

ok i'm done with the translation. ^^ took less time that I had expected thought it was less fluent than what I had wanted. but oh well, the gist should be there.

well, i'm looking forward to the demo. thought i still don't have a PS3 yet. :S
happy reading guys, and please point out any mistakes I might have made

Wow, good job digi! I liked reading that. Hype meter +10

I'm glad the overclock thing is back. I was afraid they would change it.

I'm looking forward to the demo too. Though I hear only Snow and Lightning will be playable. Figures.

So Snow's fighting style is weaponless? I suppose that'd make him something close to a Blackbelt, right? XD

I wonder if Snow and Lightning will be able to steal their enemies' weapons in battle and use them against them like they do in cutscenes. They've been showing an awful lot of that for it to be cutscene-only, I'd say.

Nah, that's not it. Great job with the translations though. :D

They don't explain everything though. These aren't actual questions so don't feel compelled to answer, these are just the things they didn't explain. =)

You know how there are three segments on the command list bar? How do those segments fill up so you can use them? Do attacks occur the second you use them or can you store them like in KH:COM? Does the battle menu change when the enemy attacks you (like it seems to in that scan)? Why couldn't the command list bar itself just be the ATB, and have it fill up rather than the bar next to Lightning's name?

Questions for another day I guess, can't wait for the demo. :D
