It will either be a timed exclusive or have exclusive content only for the 360. It's the way of this stupid gen.

Wouldn't suprise me, SE seems to kiss Microsoft's ass this generation. I am pretty sure Microsoft rushes SE to put shit on the market and that's why most of there stuff is unfinished. Good thing sony still has FFXIII and FFVXIII or they would be laggy and have major framerate problems. :P
Whatever though, I guess that's business and with the economy across the globe they need to do what they need to do. But there sales are going to reflect it in the end. Sony was the best thing that ever happened to SE and they fucked themselves.

I have been waiting so long, everyday, I have about 10 news feeds for Square Enix and now finally, I hear some good news, at least something to look forward to. On Wiki it says a release date of Q4 09, (Same as FF13) but I doubt it hugely, but at least now we have something -fairly- solid.
I hope they do learn a lot from the previous FFXI, I'm not fussed bout how long it takes to level, though shorten it by around 20% would be nice, just the way you got to farm is so awful, the crafting and everything, taking almost a year just to get 1 out of i think 18 jobs there are now, actually geared.
I played FF on and off for 4yrs, It was fun, but so many people felt the same that it was to stressful and time consuming, most of my friends quit, I only played cuse I had nothing better to do but now I've gone. I really am looking forward to this MMO, It's the only one I'll bother playing.

Yeh, thing is that video is really old, by next E3 it will be 4 yrs old, a lot will of changed by then, it does have 10 music and has a lot of previous armor, though I hope this time they have more animation like people actually walking around and things, They have it in FF12 where you'd see towns folks carrying stuff around and things, everyone wasn't stood there dead.

I think it's a FFXI upgrate. They've done so much to improve FFXI's gameplay and system in the past, cant imagine they would bring another new MMO which should run next to FFXI. The game needs a new graphic that's what i think. The girl in the trailer looks like an Elvaan and the city could be Jueno.

Nah it'll be a entire new MMO, as they've said it will play along, it'll be a good income source for SE. I don't think they could upgrade the new FF as easy as just making a whole new game, each expansion and upgrade would have to be redone to fit the new engine. Probably better to just start again, like building a hotel then after a decade it's better to just rebuild with better materials and structure than to try make do with old technology. In one interview they even said it's become challenging, they can't upgrade the amount of spaces you have in your inventory very easily and that they've had to gone to other routes to make it work (such as mog locker).

I mean, why running 2 MMO project at the same time? Man, that's fucking costly. :o
U have to think, a graphic upgrade is an one-time thing, even upgrading the whole engine might takes 2 years. And making a completly new MMO is a huge thing. Every single piece of the concept has to be new, the gameplay, the setting, the system, the world, the community, ect.
The 2 MMO from the same company would be in competion with each other. Why not focus on 1 MMO and get the best shizzle out of it. If the new MMO going to be like the demo trailer, oh fuck it looks fucking awesome, but what if FFXI shit on it like big mama. There's no garantee the new project will run as good as FFXI, thus FFXI does.
Desi
Jan 02 2009, 07:32 PM
it isn't as costly as you would believe. many smaller companies run multiple MMO's at once and FFXI is bringing in more money than anything Square-enix has at the moment. It may split the Userbase apart but that is doubtful since there will always be people that prefer XI and others that would like this new MMO for many different reasons. It isn't like this new one will be just a improvement over XI, they will try new things that some will be sour too.
Also isn't square still running like two other MMO's in the first place? Some turn-based one and Fantasy Earth Zero?
Larsal
Jan 02 2009, 11:42 PM
It looks like FF11 in every way and it will cost SE a load of shit to run a title like that (in graphical way it looks like). Maybe FF11 does make some gain but still the money is to improve and keep FF11 running. Personally i wouldnt play a new MMO and giving up my char. And supposly other FF11 mid-/hardcore player wouldnt either. FF11's community would stick with FF11 as long as FF11 is fun and SE keeps content and update coming for it. Stll some ppl will play the better game. The new title could break FF11's fanbase.
SE used to have Fantasy Earth but no comment on that since it's a free MMO now.

you do realise that video was nothing more than a tech demo using enhanced FFXI character models and armor. i am pretty sure you do and a tech demo is not the final representation of the final game. FFXI makes tons of gain, over 6mil a month to be precise and with less than a quarter going to upkeep. The team on XI is no bigger than what 30 people now going by a interview from JPbutton?
The real point of a new MMO is to get new people to join. was the point of Lineage 2 to get all the lineage 1 players to quit and move on? No, same with everquest 2 which was to get a whole new base of players. I doubt the new MMO is going to be XI-2 especially since Tanaka likes Vana D'iel as a singular world and not split into different games. Main reason there isn't a offline game for it, he doesn't want the world to remain "static".

After reading all the replies and the EGM article I'd like to start off by saying nothing from FFXI should be taken away. FFXI is not like Guild Wars and WoW for a reason. The game is made to fit hardcore and casual gamer lifestyles. If you have trouble leveling 1-75 now, after all the patches they've made to help you out, stick with RPG's and stay away from MMORPG's. It still took me a month to Lv1-70 in WoW without using a single add on first time through and I must have played every single day for minimum 6 hours. As for FFXI you don't need to make multiple characters to get everything the game has to offer. It should take several years to get from Lv1-75, and get rank 10 in a nation. Just because other people make it look easy does not mean everyone will progress at the same rate. There are some exceptions to FFXI where you will have to kill monsters hundreds of times to get the drop you need (currently, only if you are anti-social inside the MMO) like Genkai 1, and perhaps Genkai 5. But no one forces you to camp 3 hours windows on monsters that spawn once a irl day. The items that HNM's drop don't really improve your character that much they just pimp your character out. If the whole game is instanced and NM practically spawn ontop of each other the window is so small the game delivers no challange.
Sorry for the negativity but that article was bs aside from the fact I am still searching for the expansion in WOTG too, though WOTG costs almost no money, and the Campaign music annoys me more than anything in this world.
I'll never stop playing FFXI until I find something just as addicting, and other than heroine I don't know what can do that. I'll continue to play FFXI even when this new MMORPG arrives and I'll also play this new one as well. I bought FFXI the first day of release and I was hooked ever since, I figure if anything in this world will help me relive the experience I once had as a Valkurm noob it will be this upcomming SE MMORPG.
It will be difficult holding this hobby considering it costs me now 30 dollars a month to pay for both my characters and my XBL subscription. So one thing I would like to see for sure is a decrease in price for FFXI. It's a big wish but it will be hard putting up over 40 dollars a month on just 2 video games.
Other than that I have no requests from SE for this new MMO. I love FFXI and the fanbase involved with FFXI is truely remarkable. I don't know the meaning of self-centered when I play FFXI. I meet people in FFXI who make me want to change myself to be a better person. I've never been thanked so many times just for making a horrible merit PT, or for tossing someone a Cure and a protect while they are trying to level up.
This game will be a thrill for me whether it's the exact same as FFXI or completely different.

There are a few things I would like to see them change when it comes to this game.
Spawn times on Notorious Monsters and High Notorious Monsters. I'm sorry but 1 hour to a week is annoying as hell.
The Gil needs to be dropped by ALL monsters, not just beastmen. Also a decent amount. 100 Gil a fight would be even decent I think. It is so hard to make money in FFXI and they had WAY to many Gil sinks.
Make things a little more soloable, don't get me wrong I enjoy the party aspects but it gets frustrateing when you need other people for every single thing.
Other then that, I like everything. Also if they add microtransactions I will NOT join this game. I'm sorry but Microtransactions are stupid and for the lazy.

See NM's and HNM's are for novelty purposes only. They are there for fun, not necessary. If you absolutely need drops off the 3 kings and the wyrms then you would be in a hardcore end game LS and FFXI would most likely come before your irl health/work anyways. Plus if you can get a a ToD for a NM you normally don't have to wait very long to see him spawn. Just afk by the spawn area before you go to bed, when you wake up count how many hours you were asleep and if the NM didn't spawn you know that much time has passed and how much time could possibly be left until the NM's next spawn. Or you could be smart and d/l one of those software that tracks the time of everything in your FFXI chatlog, so say Leaping Lizzy dies in your chat log. It will say, "Leaping Lizzy was defeated by ______. [12:36:47]" 12:37 PM basically. Either way NM and HNM camping is rather easy, and when camping HNM's you're usually with a couple other people.
Anyways I definately don't want to see them change NM/HNM times. NM's used to be the only reason I played FFXI pre CoP. After doing like 3 HNM's a day for about a month I started to get into sky. But to keep a casual fanbase as well as a hardcore fanbase, having some fast spawning NM's would be nice too. Actually what am I saying? You can get items equally good to the ones HNM's and NM's drop just by doing BCNM's and Nyzul Isle Assault. Honestly I've only ever killed one Wyrm and I really don't feel the need to ever kill another. NM's used to be a luxury and now they are everywhere. Over 2 thousands NM's in the game, and sometimes my server has borderline 1k people online. There is nothing special about killing Behemoth when everyone has already killed him dozens of times, not just in BD but in Nyzul Isle as well. One LS on my server has killed Tiamat over 194 times... How many pairs of Herald Gaiters does one LS need?
SE has done a terrific job at fullfilling everyones requests I don't think it's so much the game that need changing as it is the technical things.
How about no load times like WoW? Maybe put some spooky music in the dungeons like they did to most of the ToaU areas. FFXI has some of the most engaging music I have ever heard (and some of the most annoying) but it's soooo boring being in a zone like Delkfutt's tower (identical to the the Grand Palace of Hux'zoi and Ve' leggon Palace; stupid) and having no music, just wind blowing sounds. And I actually never have a problem with this unless I d/c because I NEVER log out of FFXI (for this reason actually) but a faster way of getting into the game. When I d/c it sometimes takes me 5 minutes to get back into the game. That's enough time to get replaced in a PT if you aren't spamming the enter key every second. So please, how about a much quicker and simpler way of getting into the game?
I'm not sure what to think about the gil thing. I'm not good when it comes to economics so I can't just say "Send everyone tons of gil every week like cash for life but it would be "Gil for life!", and I can't say "Make items worth more to NPC's" because then there would be people selling tons and tons of crafting mats to npc's and crafters wouldn't ever be able to farm mats to skill up because everyone will be farming the mats just to sell to the NPC. So I'm lost in this subject, I don't normally find myself with too much gil trouble but however I don't require that much gil. There are several ways to make gil in the game but it seems like every single possible way requires some sort of luck/gamble/time. Only consistent way of making gil I find is farming ooooh saaaaay, tree cuttings in the Sanctuary. I use a rdm/thf with uncapped thf sub and I don't even have sword capped. The only reason I can do this and make decent money from it is because I have a Joyeuse, which I spent 2 days of window camping w/ friends to get. So it all boils down to the fact I had to find friends willing to help me camp+kill Charybdis, then having thf sub. Which takes many hours to do, but because I had it all done farming cuttings is not half bad! :) I am clueless as to how a WHM or a BRD would make gil consistently. Or even a BLM.
As for the difficulty of the monsters. I enjoy being on my seat everywhere I go, making sure I need sneak and invis up at all times and how one small move could set me back half an hour of Chocobo riding, teleporting and what not. On the other hand I am a RDM though and Invis and Sneak are free and at my disposal at anytime so this is biased, same for solo'ing I can solo VT's with little difficulty and I'm really not that well geared of a RDM I just happen to have many merits. But I do know a War/nin who cannot solo DC's and even has trouble with EP's at 75. Him being a horrible warrior has nothing to do with the fact mobs are definately OP'd in FFXI but then again I'm sure everyone has become adapted to the difficulty of the mobs in FFXI. I think if all the mobs just suddenly dropped 25% of their HP and their STR and VIT dropped 10% the game would feel like a joke. It would be wierd being able to solo a IT with ease then going and fighting Kirin whom is only 5 lvl's higher but has 100x more HP/str/vit. Unless even NM's were weaker too than basically you're just asking for a huge overall nerf, which I think would be a bad idea but w/e. I'm sorry I made such a long post but I'm just soooooo excited to see new E3 footage.
I bet it won't come out until like October 2010 or 11. ;_; I need to freeze myself in a time capsul or something.

They need to add more monsters and a wider variety of places too. Most of the dungeons looked relatively the same but with different colors. I was dissapointed with the same monsters but with higher difficulty and the same name. I mean a couple times is ok. But 6-7 times is kind of annoying.
Valkurm Dunes = Altepa Desert = The other sand place by Kuftal Tunnel. Where the hell are some pyramids or some tombs...just sand and water. Oh Joy!
I was happy about the Northern Lands though. Except for the fact that no one ever goes there anymore.
On the Gil topic. It's so hard to deal with money because of all the Gil Sinks. NPC Prices, AH Taxes, Bazzar Taxes, Limbus, Dynamis, Chocobos, etc etc.... You can't have so many Gil sinks when there is no money coming into the game. Now I'm not lazy to make money at all i'm just saying its SUPER difficult. Our methods are Crafting, which is pretty much useless unless you have 99 Smithing or Goldsmithing. Those take millions beyond millions to level too. BCNMS or KSNMS or ISNMS.... almost all the good items are not worth jack anymore so most of them aren't worth doing. Thief is the biggest one people use but it takes just about an hour to make 10-20k if there arent others around. And of course you got the beastmen that drop like 30-60 Gil. Hooray 30 Gil!!! That will so help me pay for that 250k sword I need to buy or that 600k Scroll I need.
Also I know all about HNMs I used to be in a HNMLS. Was the main WHM of the LS, and had 75 WAR.
If SE can fix some of these problems, Rapture will be the perfect MMO. Also I did not like WoW, FF11 is alot better.

Agreed. Pre-ToaU I would see crabs in West Ronfaure before I go to Valkurm, then again in Dunes from 14-18, then in Qufim, then The Boyhada Tree, then Kuftal, then back in the BTree again at 65+.
Not that this is a pro or con but why does everything (monsters too) have to be practically impossible to pronounce in the English language in ToaU? I just found out Bastok was pronounced [BAY-stoke] but even the most common monster in Toau the Colibri is hard for me to prounounce. I really should have looked up some toau mythology before I bought the expansion pack because I had no clue what a Mammool or Lamia was.
Nevertheless I've always thought the Manticore was one of the coolest mobs in the game and I can't wait to see what they make them look like in the new MMORPG when the graphics are back up to par.

Well, lets hope Square-Enix gives us all the same chances this time..
This means they should at least give us this:
World wide Release on all Platforms (PS3, Xbox360, Vista)
Access to special Areas also worldwide (Dynamis in FFXI.. first JP.. then world)
I live in the EU and i'm really tired of waiting for games that have been released in another country about 1 year ago... I don't understand why they don't make FFXIII world wide too.. like "The Last Remnant" (Epic fail on PS3 release lol)

FFXI had great story, great looking characters (way better looking than WOW) and great jobs. My gripe ias lvl 75 Summoner. I got that high in job and it still ended up being a ghetto white mage. I know they added more stuff in merits for Summoner. But if they want job to be good, only certain levels should have had summons. People just got job to show off pets and thats it. I hated how other jobs were better in summon prime battles than the job itself. I played FFXI 3 years straight. But I don't plan to play new MMO from SE if its like FFXI.

Did you ever do end game activities? Summoner's rape at DD. Probably the best DD there is for end game NM's. Incredible damage and zero hate. I never see SMN's healing but most 75 SMN's I know have multiple jobs at 75, so they wouldn't be merit/xp'ing on their smn.

SE has totally done a great job with "fixing" things over the years in FFXI. I have played from release trust me. One thing they did learn is that you don't gimp jobs after the game has been released for 2 years, you improve others. (even if they never did roll back the changes to the gimped jobs). The biggest thing was the level sync parties, while still needing work it has been great not seeking over 30 minutes most days where before you could seek 8 hours and not get one invite.
There is one thing that I have to complain about however and that's drops in endgame events such as Dynamis. Now maybe they have learned from their mistakes cause in things such as einherjar everyone gets an equal ammount of the coin when its over, its not up to the LS leader etc etc. But in case they didnt, I do NOT think it is fair for people that have say, been to dynamis 20+ times and have not yet gotten a drop for their job, while some people go 10 times and get all 5 pieces of their job gear. There really should be some kind of point system for events like this where when you earn enough you talk to the NPC and buy your gear, like they did with einherjar (to SOME degree they did anyway).
But even with that I think they're finally on the right track. I can't wait for the news.

@ rpg, SE has long said thier next MMO will not have final fantasy in the name. While I agree with some of the article, overall the author seems to know very little about ffxi or its fanbase. "Microtransactions".....all i can say is HELL TO THE NO!!! Thats a quick way to say FU to the ppl who actually play the game to earn items in game. I've never been a fan of being required to buy armor if I want to upgrade either.
They do need to instance more battles though. Ppl that do dynamis, limbus, einjerhar get screwed now if someone claims a zone ahead of them because of lack of instanced zones. Updates could be handled better as well but I think that will come along with upgrades in servers with a new game.
Will also be nice to see how much they more they can do with a game without limiting it to 56k bandwith. Alot of ppl fail to realize that ffxi is capped at dialup speed due to it being on ps2 as well. I cant tell you how many times an SE rep said "We would like to do that, but due to ps2 limitations"
I'm really looking forward to hearing more though. I really think they have learned alot from ffxi as it was really alot of trial and error on SE's part with it being thier 1st mmo and all. Hopefully we hear more soon!!

is there ANYONE who actually plays an mmo because of an intriguing storyline?? i understand the gameplay can be addictave and fun but is there really anyone who ever looks forward to an expansion because of seing how the story expands? sometimes i think game genres like MMO is the reason why games is less of an art and more of a simple money-making-industry

Considering that...Well FFxiii
is NOT an Mmo
It probably will not be the way that you all believe it to be.
It may end up an MMO in the sense that you will get to have one or two friends run around with you
But look plainly at the Letters/Words of MMO
MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER ONLINE.
FFXIII is Simply enough a new Console RPG
that's it.
They learned their lesson from FFXI
Do your fucking homework dimwits
Congratulations, you're a dumbass
Square is perfectly capable of making an MMO one of the flagship titles of the XIII compilation; in fact I'd find it strange if tey didn't take the opportunity to do so considering it's being made with Crystal Tools.
My money says the new MMO is a major title in the Fabula Nova Crystallis

i'm surprised.. i'd think that after 5 years one would get tired of the ongoing storyline that never has an ending.
I tried to play an mmo once but got tired after five minutes off character creation.lol

Well, FFXI is not like WoW. When the expansions get released they release the missions over time. This creates quality missions, and not trash.
Wings of the Goddess has been out for like almost 1 and a half years, and they are only 50% done with the missions.
The storylines we have are:
San d'Oria
Bastok
Windurst
Rise of the Zilart
Chains of Promathia (Uber hard ass missions, but mega fun)
Treasures of Aht Urhgan
Wings of the Goddess
A Crystaline Prophecy
and the 2 new ones that will be coming.
It takes quite awhile to do the missions/quests in XI. It isn't a game where you talk to a NPC and they say... oh hey go kill this. And then for the 2nd task you go back to that exact same monster for a certain item.
I love FFXI, but I am dieing to play Code Name Rapture.
