KYOTO, Japan, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Nintendo Co Ltd said it has not felt any particular impact from the economic slowdown, with sales of its Wii video game console and DS handheld game player still strong.
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata told Reuters in an interview that Wii sales during the Thanksgiving holiday week came to about 800,000 units in the United States, more than double the 350,000 units it sold in the same period a year earlier.
"When the economy is strong, people tend to buy three things from the top of their wish list. But when things are bad, people often buy only the first thing on their list," Iwata said. "Fortunately for us a lot of shoppers put our products at the top of their list."
Iwata said sales of its DS handheld were up about 20 percent during the Thanksgiving holiday week in the U.S. compared with a year earlier. (Reporting by Kiyoshi Takenaka)

Whate the hell? Talk about a monster. This is some f'd up shit indeed. I can tell you this is very surprising to me. I know Wii is crushing PS360. But 800k in one week = wtf?

It's been doing this consistently for quite a while. It isn't really news.

This stuff bugs me too. It's bad for gamers because more of their dollars will go to cheap tech and cutesy type research and development etc. I think it would be better for the quality of future games if PS360 was on top.

It usually sells 800.000 units/month. This is 800.000 in one week. That's pretty damn amazing if you ask me.

Being first in place in sales does not equal good games

No but it seems to clearly show how retarded the human population is to prefer a piece of outdated technology to next gen consoles.

WOO WII, I LUEV J00, YAY BRAWL.

Two greatest Wii games are Brawl and Umbrella Chronicles.

A free for all and a railshooter.

I lol'd too.

The sales are hype.

It's a shame I own one. The older gen games are the better ones, and pretty much all I use it for, aside from the above two.

800,000 more useless consoles sold. Sorry Wii owners, I don't mean any offense.

I got a story to tell you guys though. Last night, I was at walmart and this family was looking at the Wii and a clerk came up and was talking to them. She was telling them that the Wii has the best HD graphics out of the three next gen consoles. That KILLED me. Then she was going on to explain on how it was such a good deal because it came with like sports games. She was telling them that the sports games were huge and that you could play them for years and enjoy them. (Amazeing most people play them for a month...if that). I was sort of just standing behind the other isle laughing as this stupid family was getting suckered into this deal.

Idiots....They will play it for a month and then it will sit around gathering dust like most Wii's.

the reason why this console has sold so much is
1. the fact that is a familiar game, and with familiar i mean that they are many games which a whole family can enjoy.[ wii sports...etc ]

2. group tension, if you don't have one... you just suck : )

AND

3. the amazing....!!!
controlers! :D
they just captivate you, because they have the same function of a normal T.V controler! but naow for a game console!
: DDDDDDD (yaaaaay!~~)

that only shows how this console has absorbed every single owner's brains
and the people around him/her/them.

I can credit Nintendo on there controllers because I do find them nifty, but the console is general is just plain boring. Also, I know 5 real life relatives that all went crazy talking about the Wii, all hyped to get it. Asking me why didn't I get one and I replied because "I will stop playing after a few weeks because I will get bored." Guess what a few weeks after they got theres they didn't play it anymore, I was right....It's like a last gen console with cutesy games and a very limited selection of good ones.

I will never buy a Wii.....So I must suck extreemly hard. I don't respect microsoft at all but at least they gave me a reason to take some interest into buying their console.

WE must suck alot n_n

lulz that also happened to a friend.
he got the wii.
soon after he decided it wasn't THAAT good.
so he sold it to some desperate-to-get-wii-for-this-christsmas-couple.
and sold them some games and earned a good cash ;D

now he can't decide whether to buy a ps3 or a 360 xD

surrender! :wacky:

Am I the only one that destroyed their wii because it was worthless?

Yeah...I bought a Wii cause I thought it wold be amazing...but the truth is the only games that are actually fun for me to play on it are.
Mario Galaxy
Zelda Twilight Princess
Super smash bros brawl
Mario kart
Other then that it just sits there....Nintedo screwed us over, they aren't making any good games for the Wii and its not a very powerful console at all... but then again I fell for it, so Nintedo wins i guess T_T
They didn't make a Wii exclusive Zelda game yet...(if they even do)
Thank God I have a PS3 too

None of the third-party games on the few are good, though i felt NMH exciting.

NMH isn't my type of game though, even though I saw that it got a good score.

A few weeks? I got tired of it after a day. I'm so glad I sold my Wii, what a piece of junk.

I'm not surprised, we've been selling Wii's left and right for the past couple months; The reason it's doing so well is because it's a family console so more people of many ages will buy it. The only game I'm interested in that's on the Wii is "No More Heroes" and "Super Smash Bros."

No More Heroes 2 and Fatal Frame IV are looking pretty good for '09.

Wii isn't that bad, to be honest. I own one, and although the good games are fairly few and far between, I have a reasonable collection.

- Wii Sports (more of a capability demo than anything, came with the console)
- WarioWare: Smooth Moves (hilarious until you finish it, still a great party game)
- Super Mario Galaxy (one of the best games on wii, and probably the most inventive)
- Super Smash. Bros BRAWL! (tied with MP3 was the best wii game. fun as anything)
- Link's Crossbow Training (because i am a rabid zelda fan, and it game with the zapper)
- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (yes, it was originally a gamecube game but still great fun)
- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (probably the best wii game. retro studios are amazing)
- No More Heroes (incredibly addicting, great take on the genre)
- Bully: Scholarship Edition (like the 360 version, but way less buggy. excellent game)
- Medal of Honour: Heroes 2 (great fps. smooth controls)
- House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return (was playing this recently. short but fun, and good ports)
- Call of Duty 3 (inferior to counterparts in every way but controls. controls are good)
- Splinter Cell: Double Agent (remake, but wii controls are good)

I'm pretty sure I own most good games on the Wii. The problem isn't the existing games, it's the release lineup - I mean, apart from the next mario and zelda games, the only decent looking game coming up is The Conduit.

Anyway, the sales figures don't really suprise me. I know a lot of people who've never bought a console before who own a Wii - it's different, innovative, and parents like buying it for their kids since it encourages activity.

The only games I seen on that list were SSBB, Metroid, and House of dead got my attention.. The others were either short and boring. Or they were remade games that were on previous systems that have just about the same graphics >.>

Third Party developers really need to make some good games, they really have no excuse.

Wii sells the most console AND third party games so why aren't developers taking advantage of this!?

Oh well, at least No More Heroes 2 is coming out :D

I only bought a Wii because of Twilight Princess, SSBB, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Super Mario Galaxy. Obviously there's plenty of fun games like them, but those are my personal favourites.
