We all know the pandemic of AIDS and how it's basically a death sentence (minus Magic Johnson). We also know that it pretty much "can't" be cured right?

BERLIN - An American man who suffered from AIDS appears to have been cured of the disease 20 months after receiving a targeted bone marrow transplant normally used to fight leukemia, his doctors said Wednesday.
While researchers — and the doctors themselves — caution that the case might be no more than a fluke, others say it may inspire a greater interest in gene therapy to fight the disease that claims 2 million lives each year. The virus has infected 33 million people worldwide.
Dr. Gero Huetter said his 42-year-old patient, an American living in Berlin who was not identified, had been infected with the AIDS virus for more than a decade. But 20 months after undergoing a transplant of genetically selected bone marrow, he no longer shows signs of carrying the virus.

This is good news right or is it just a fluke? I know when my mom had bone marrow transplant, it got rid of the cancer until it came back again (a month after).

Great news . I think one day or another we will find the cure for AISD.
However, i doubt that there will be a definitve cure for cancer .

We're not too far off curing cancer, actually. Something about nano-somethings and being able to target cancer cells more accurately. AIDS, on the other hand, is by far more difficult to treat.

Scientists have been researching for years and haven't come any closer to a cure, I'd say this is probably a fluke. Hope it's not though.
