This thread is strangely familiar... (Oh wait, it's from gametrailers.com lol)

Uh, letsee... Maybe Final Fantasy XII, but I didn't know much about it when I bought it so I have no idea about the hype.
MotorStorm definately. Load times were massive, game was average.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Ugh.

FFXII definitely lived up to the hype, imo it would probably be FFX-2 the story seemed too clumsy and rushed the same can be said for the graphics .

Lol yeah, X-2 was a bit weird even though it was fun and had a sloppy story.

From what I played of FFXII, I hated it overall...Balthier was the only cool part from what I saw. So, it wasn't anywhere near the hype for me.

I agree about XII. One of the best Final fantasies ever to grace a system, and it surpassed my expectations by far.In fact it's 2nd only to VII in my book

I'd say Nights Journey of Dreams. I'm a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE "Nights" fan and I'd been waiting for a sequel for the longest time. I go tit for the wii only to discover it was just more of the same with better graphics only...not as good. They should've found out a way to amp up the fun and not just re-hash out an old game. I still enjoyed Journey of dreans...I just wish it was more

Also, just about every Sonic game after Sonic Adventure 2 has failed and the biggest was that pile of glitches that calls it self "Sonic the Hedgehog" on the 360 and PS3. Talk about the biggest let down in ages. Sonics intro to next gen was an unfinished nightmare that cries out for redemption, but there is none.

P.S. My friend here with me says Assasins Creed failed for him. Something about the ending ruining everything

Well there will be a sequel to that game(Assassin's creed) so that's why the ending didn't really make much sense, but that game was sure fun to play with. As for the Sonic series I wasn't really in to that game, you can say that about the Dynasty Warriors series too.

Army of Two. I was really expecting a good shooter.

It was decent, but it was sadly, still not as fu as Halo to jump in and play with a friend.

Yeah. The ending was pretty odd. Hopefully the sequel would clear that up.

LAIR pretty much failed for me. It was just mediocre at best.

Sonic the Hedgehog ÜBER-EPIC fail. I was really expecting something grand for the PS3, but this game was just a throw for the abyss. Every subsequent Sonic game's been a letdown, except a bit for Wii's Sonic.

FFXII - extremely disappointing, I was expecting something great, but it was garbage.

DMC4 - 3 was so much better

MGS4 - still liked the game but Snake Eater (3) blows it away

LoZ: Twilight Princess - liked the game but the series is starting to get stale

Obviously you are not a uber zelda fan. :aldo:

The Cel-Shaded graphics not only gave it a new look but that game revived the franchise. And it was epic and amazing to boot.

XII, Meh. I could care less. It was not garbage, but it was not awesome.

I will agree with you about MGS3. It was amazing. and LOZ: TTP was good too. A great game to help kickstart the Wii (Like it even needs any sales help).

Ditto. Windwaker kicked the tradition and the norm in the nuts and ran off with the gold. It was awesome. I feel the same about LOZ: TTP. IMO the series just keeps getting better and better

XII, Meh. I could care less. It was not garbage, but it was not awesome.

To ech his own. It was a big step away from the direction they'd ben going for awhile and that's what I loved so much about it. So smartly written and I became absorbed in the story. It was like Star wars/final fantasy. I had a bunch of friends who couldn't get into it though...sucks for them

The new one for the DS is mana from heaven compared to the last batch of piss flavored toast. Here's hoping that Sonic Unleashed and Sonic and the Black Knight don't suckate'balls

Ugh.

Yeah that's the biggest dissapointment for me. Wasn't bad but I was expecting it to take a shit on the others. But 3 still kicks it ass :aldo:

Lair
Haze
Army Of Two
Assassins Creed
Battlefield Bad Company (Was fun but not as great as Id hoped for)
FF12 - Biggest lump of crap since FF9
Devil May Cry 4
Silent Hill Homecoming - Expecting it to be a 10/10, thought it was a 7/10.

-DMC4 (Although I liked that Nero's moves were more sword based then Dante, it just could've been better).

-Kingdom Farts 1 and 2 (so kiddish)

-Dirge of Craperus (it was so fucking boring. SE shouldnt make FPS games)

I hardly get hyped for games though or listen to the hype so...

Yeah, I was going to say that. People bummed it, but I turned out shit. I didn't mind the Sixaxis flight, I just hated using the sixaxis while mashing X WHILE mashing square. It was stupid and annoying.

I completely disagree about both Kingdom hearts games

Yes Dirge was weak sauce and it's still the weakest part of the compilation. The story as...o but the gameplay made dolphins cry. Hopefully Square has learned from this baby and will use a condom next time they think about squirting out something before they're ready.

These topics make me depressed. It makes me realise how many times I have been let down by both media hype and personal hype.

Games that did not live up to the hype: (doesn't mean all of them were garbage)

Mass Effect
Neverwinter Nights 2
Guild Wars
Assassin's Creed
Motorstorm
Final Fantasy XII
Suikoden 5
Disgaea 2
Ninja Gaiden 2
Devil May Cry 2
Too Human
Titan Quest
Jak and Daxter 3
Fable
Ninety Nine Nights
Gran Tourismo 4
Jade Empire
Final Fantasy VIII
Lost Odyssey
Virtua Fighter 5
Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom

Man this hurts. I could go on for hours. And I'm not even mentioning any games from the SNES era.

The only game I agree with you on this is Lair....

FF12 was definitely NOT failure. It was different, and the story was complex. DMC4 was the only good one in the series imo. and why is Haze and Army of Two so under rated. Co-Op FPS games? I had a blast with them. Assassins creed was alright. and Battlefield was a super fun game. Never played SHH though.

^ and to the guy 2 posts up. How the HELL did FFVIII not live up to its hype, because of the draw system? Epic Fail man.

yes, it was quite short, but I managed to extended for a bit, by doing all side quests, in terms of lengh I think its just like KOTOR

Not that all of the games in my list are not all crap games. Many of them just did not live up to the hype.

Mass Effect has a very good main story - but sidequests have never been so poor in a Bioware game. And the battle system = wtf? Even insanity is a breeze and all enemies just run around like crazy with no AI. It was still a good game.

Assassin's Creed has the same type of missions over and over again. And why the hell do you need to collect flags in one of the mission types? Also I updated the game so that I would get rid of bugs. The first thing that happens Altair falls through the ground... I did however love the setting of this game.

Guild Wars has the most boring PvP I have ever encountered, Warhammer Online is the way to go.

Final Fantasy VIII had a setting I simply could not enjoy. Actually what saves this game is the Draw system. I just didn't like the Garden ideas and much of the story was not what I like. I did like the parts with Laguna.

FF XII had a great battle system but the story needed more focus. It was not what I expected after playing other Matsuno games. Ivalice itself is the best setting in any game I have played.

Ninja Gaiden 2 was a good game but it had a bad camera and was actually not as good as Ninja Gaiden 1

Jade Empire was fun at the start but got boring in the end - a solid game but nothing more.

Fable was a very good game, but at that time I actually believed what P.M. was prasing it as a groundbreaking game.

______

As you can see I do not hate these games but also they did not live up to my expectations.

If a game doesn't live up to its hype it is not a shit game, it is just that one had higher hopes.

Neal

but sidequests have never been so poor in a Bioware game.

Or... any game? Seriously, a new planet with a different coloured ground texture is not another sidequest. They were pathetic, copy and pasted environments all over the place. I hated it. The overall game was great the first time I played it but the repetitive environments stopped me from bothering with the sidequests.

GTA IV = biggest dissapointment ever

-The storyline of the game was too short.
-And they removed everything from Gta: SA that was fun, like airplanes, parachuting, pimping your car and etc.
-too little weapons to choose from
-the controls still suck
-multiplayer also suck
++ more

To be honest, I think Saint Row 2 look better because it looks more fun.
Gta IV has better storyline, but is a joke compared to Gta: SA

Never cared for GTA series, just got repetetive (or however you spell that).

-Gears of War (but don't get me wrong I thought it was a good game but not something I'd replay it wasn't all that special to me honestly)

-Halo (but Red vs. Blue is hilarious)

-Soul Calibur 3 (as much as I like the series this one just didn't do it for me, the 2nd one is definitely my favorite. 3 I didnt like the endings for the story mode and I didn't like the story mode the whole "choose your path" shit was kinda silly to me).

Metal Gear Solid 4 - Greatest game on the Playstation 3 and the game that will save the PS3 my a**.

Halo 3 - Seriously, it isn't the greatest game ever created yet the hype around it made it seem so.

Final Fantasy XII - I don't know, this one just seemed disappointing.

LittleBigPlanet - Yeah, great game, if 95% of it wasn't the servers not working and the other 5% being pubescent 13/14/15 year olds drawing penises. They could of called the game LittleBigPenis with the kind of people that were on the game.

Home - They keep hyping this up, if you can call it that, when is it going to come out, the 25th of Never?

Playstation Network - It's free, it was hyped somewhat, too bad its crap. I mean seriously, you can't upkeep the servers Sony, now we have a LittleBigFlop instead of a LittleBigPlanet.

Yeah, the last one doesn't really count, too bad. Now I hope Resistance 2 is good, if I ever get around to buying it.

DYNASTY WARRIORS 6. *facedesks* I had REAL high hopes for that game and played it once and never played it again. =X I've played DW since it first came out and 6 did nothing for me. I was highly dissapointed. :(

GTA4. Was good, expected a bit more OOMPHHH. :3

That's it for me. I'm getting GOW2 soon, hope this lives up to expectations.

edit: @Sabin -- Lost Odyssey? I thought it lived up to the hype! Great story, great game -- very traditional gameplay... it all just worked, in my opinion. Very good RPG for Xbox.
