Sony and Toshiba to begin mass producing 45nm cell processor in 2009 -- cheaper, slimmer PS3s to come?
Sony's gearing new PS3 bundles for this coming holiday season, but the always-appreciated system price-cuts might be coming soon after. According to the Japanese publication, Nikkan, Sony and Toshiba will begin the mass production of the new 45nm Cell processor in 2009, which will replace the current 65nm PS3 processor.
Not only will the new processor cost less than the current one, but it will also conserve energy cost by 40%. In the PS3's initial launch, the console utilized 90nm chips transitioning to the current 65nm processors, which reportedly introduced the 40GB bundles. With the upcoming 45nm chips expected to lower both cost and power demands, we're gearing for a price-cut sometime during Spring 2009.

It's interesting what they can do now a days with the processor, I heard IBM is coming out with a 22nm processor, that will be a major leap forward. Anyways, even with a 45nm processor, the Playstation 3 will still produce a lot of heat as with any powerful 'computer' electronic device. A slimmer version of the Playstation 3 could mean it's time for the PS3's version of the Red Ring of Death. None of the "Next-Gen" consoles are slim (except for the Wii) for a reason...but then again, what do I know? :P

ugh, so we have to wait until next year to get the smaller ones? I like the slimmer versions ^_^ I have the slim version of the PS2 and I was hoping to get the PS3 the same way. Oh well, whatever, at least they still plan to do the price-cut thing.

Skinny is always better. At least when it comes to game consoles.

This is good news. If it's cheap enough, I could get the new PS3 as a late Christmas present.

Nice! Slimmer PS3 means cheaper PS3. Take that Xbox 360, it's been 3 years already since it came out and Microsoft still haven't release a slimmer one.

There has been some rumor art about a slim ps3 (google -> images -> slim ps3), but that slim is impossible considering the 2.5" HDD. But, never say never, we may at least get close to those images...

You're talking about the 'PS3 Slim' art with the silver console, aren't you? I reckon it looks like a photoshopped Wii. Lol

They can always go lowfi and ghetto-rig what should be an external hardrive from WD of someone haha. my 120gig external is no thicker than a 1/4" wallet xD. so im pretty sure the harddrive wont effect their ability to make a slim-lined ps3....though i do think that the ps3 how it looks is fine. ps2 made an improvement when it went to thinline, even if you couldnt use the 60gig harddrives on it anymore <,<;; but that was just cause who wanted a huge brick for a console*coughXBOX360cough*

I agree. The PlayStation 3 looks great as it is, arguably the best looking console on the market. It reflects everything and stays that way if it's kept away from grubby fingers. Get close enough to the surface and you'll see that it's actually transparent. A Slim model isn't needed, although it's inevitable.

Woohoo! I was hoping for this, the big one would look too out of place in my bedroom, and energy efficient is always good ^_^ And THANK GOD for the price cut, they're sooo expensive >_<

Does it say anything about the backwords compatability at all? I remember hearing about them removing it for one of the smaller gig ones, I really hope they don't to it to this... Or am I just being irrational?
