View Full Version : How would you rate a game?

Most reviews in the world are summed up by a numerical or in some cases, alphabetical score. Many people believe though that something as complex as game can't be summed up by such a simple score. Different genres have to be taken into account.

Anyway, I was wondering how you guys would rate a game given the chance.

I'd say "Go get it. Who am I to know what you want in a game?"

Actually, I think the numbering system works as long as there is a written review to go with it.

I actually do write reviews, and each game gets a minimum of 0 and a maximum of 10 when it comes to its rating. To make the scores more accurate, I can/will rate certain games as example; 7.5; when it's called for. The only game I didn't stick to those guidelines for was Metal Gear Solid 4, which got an ∞ (Infinity) out of 10.

I'm an MGS fanboy and I wouldn't rate MGS4 anywhere near an "infinity" out of 10

I usually do a 1-10 scale. You know how that works.

I rated it infinity judging by my experience in action games and for the incredible plot, despite the fact that I'd never played a MGS game before. It is truly the best action game on the market, and the Metal Gear Solid series definately went out in a good way.
If I wrote a review for Final Fantasy X it would stretch on for over twenty pages, there's so much to know about it. O_o

I'd rate it based on how it best fulfils/exceeds/fails its genre. I'd do this with a numerical scale but I'd be judging FFXIII, for example, against the standards of the RPG genre, not where I'd place it against every game in existence.

I think that I agree with Whiplash. Really, I wish there was no number or scale or whatnot, and a review was just a review.

In the end it is just a number reflecting that ONE persons opinion. I still remember the backlash from FF Freaks about X-Plays review of CC. >>

No point giving a rating out of 10 without a written review to back it up. While i do read reviews, they still don't really change my mind about games.

It's different when an experienced gamer reviews a game because they know what's out there. For example Ibeatsephiroth (no offense) has only played MGS4 so she hasn't experienced the other games in the series, therefore if i was new to the series and wanted someone's opinion about which game was best it wouldn't be hers.

But it all still comes down to it being only one's opinion. I still think MGS4 is beyond words ;)

My way of doing so would be simple, really.

"This is what's right with it, this is what's wrong with it. If what's wrong with it is really going to bother you that much, don't get it."

... In fact, that's my way of organising my opinion on anything, really.

The numbering system for game reviews is way too full of hyperbole. How the hell is 8 average? 5 should be average (obviously).

The numbers at the end are annoying anyway, no scores and just a well written list of pros and cons would be miles better.

I'd rate each aspect of the game like, graphics, sound, gameplay, replay value, etc. And then I'd do an average from each score, for example:
1 to 10 scoring
Graphics - 9
sound - 8
gameplay - 9
replay value - 8

final score _8.5

But that's just me

Perhaps if your aim is to tell people if its good or not (obviously all reviews aims), then probably an /10 scale. If you're doing it to inform how good or not a game is and if it's worth buying or not, which is probably the reason people are reading your review, then perhaps like... something different like smilies or something, depicting if the game is worth buying or not.

Rent :)
Buy :D

rofl I dunno. Something like that, but not so shit. Or a combination of the two. I'd probably do that.

I don't mind numbered scores. Gamespot does a good thing in their reviews. They have numbered ones, but they also point out the good/bad things about the game.

Their method is good, and I'd go with it if I had to write a review.

I personally would rate it based on what interests I find through out it. Rating it based upon game play, story line, character(s) (if any), how they are placed in the story and how well the developers created his or her role throughout. Graphics are not an issue, take a look at final fantasy 7. It also depends on the game cause I am not fond of racing games
