Ive done some observation and have come to this conclusion and I'm basing the Star wars characters from episode 4 A New Hope.
Alright-
Balthier and Han Solo- a captians who fly very fast ships and have huge bountys on there head from other pilots.
Fran and Chewbacca- co-pilots to the captains and very close friends.
Vaan and R2D2- we start out with them and we get his point of view in the storybut is not the main character.
Penelo and C3P0- The voice of reason and the kind ones who we also get their point of view as well.
Basch and Obi-Wan- people who were seen as traitors to the empires of their series and the wise ones and were once great heroes.
Lady Ashe and Leia- Princess who have lost alot and are great leaders of their rebellions.
so what does everyone think?????

Fran wears stilettos. And she wears a thong. Those two things make her fundamentally different from Chewbacca.

I know :P
But seriously, and interestingly, I heard a theory that R2-D2 and C-3PO were meant to be lovers, and you said Vaan is like R2 and Penelo's like C-3PO. Another possible link. ^_^

Yeah i know and the thing about them is that in the movie you get their point of view and how they are just along for the ride same thing with vaan and penelo.

I think I remember seeing some very amusing analysis of XII drawing similar parallels to the ones you mentioned. Star Wars' influence has become very clear in the games these days, you can tell they're fans.

I must say this is one of the most brilliant posts I've read in a long time, I did not see this at all. While I laughed my arse off and scared my roommates off at the R2D2 and C3PO comment, it's so true... they're both annoying and chatty/chirpy, Vaan and Penelo... gosh that's scary, but I already thought FFXII was too much like Starwars once I started the game and saw a heavey involvement with airship armies that looked like starships and star destroyers.

Die in a fire.
FFIV's main cast borrows heavily (read: stolen) from Le Morte d'Arthur for fucks sake.

thanks for the comment on the analysis.

There was a review on the game that said pretty much the same thing

yeah i think it was a gamespot review from a long time ago but it didnt really focus on any particular character, all it said was that they are like star wars characters but not any particular one.

Not sure if you were directing your comment at me Desi, but we're talking about FFXII here, not FFIV. Nice try buddy.

----Fucking A, AT23. Do you have a problem with him and always thinking that he's talking to you? What he said was true anyway and it is relevant to Final Fantasy XII in relation to observation and inspiration from other media. ~_~

^Naunen wtf? He thought Desi was directing his comment at him but Desi wasn't, end of. Simple misinterpretation.
Anyway following up on Desi, I think just about any media has dipped in and borrowed ideas from elsewhere. Just a question of having a really large library of resources.

Ah, good analyzing there. :) Nothing wrong with being influenced, though. As long as it helps them makes good games, that's all that counts.

Being influenced is fine, everyone is influenced by something. Being pretty much identical? Bad. Although Star Wars itself was pretty much The Hidden Fortress with lasers.

In some games of the series, there's always two guys named Biggs and Wedge, a homage to the X-Wing pilots Biggs Darklighter and Wedge Antilles from Star Wars, such as FFVI (helping Terra to get an Esper), FFVII (Avalanche members), FFVIII (Galbadian soldiers), in FFX and X-2, they're guards at a blitzball stadium... and so on.

as someones said already its been noticed, ff12 was like japanese sw, but what troubling me more is the fact that ff13 is going in the same direction. The whole design of a game.

Design-wise yes, but we haven't seen enough of the characters to know if we can draw the same conclusions and it's the similarity of characters that bothers me the most.

Anything that has futuristic technology such as aircrafts that shoot lasers that go PEW PEW PEW, fuck shoot lazers in general means you copied from Star Wars. A princess in great need? Obviously stolen from Star Wars. Two friends, i.e Balthier and Fran, that venture out together no matter what? Totally stolen from Star Wars. There is no such thing as this sort of camaraderie in other media or in real life. No one but George Lucas can come up with that. No one.
In fact George Lucas invented all of that and more. He invented the space genre. He invented princesses in distress and can kick butt. He invented two friends that are on the run from loan sharks or some shit like that. He invented robots and the concept of political corruption and turmoil. Let's not forget that he invented reptilian creatures as well as the porcine and rabbit types. Oh and desert kingdoms like Dalmasca were obviously stolen from the great George Lucas. Good and evil? George Lucas invented it.
I dare you to name me someone who invented these things before George Lucas because let me tell you something: those people are a bunch of charlatans. You know why Jule Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" was so advanced? He got into a time machine and stole all those futuristic concepts from George Lucas. Every one of those assholes had a time machine and decided to copy the mystique and genius that is George Lucas and Star Wars. Prove me wrong. DO IT NOW.

The Fermi paradox.
There, I proved you wrong. :P
Aurelia
Mar 09 2009, 02:31 AM
Lies.
Nothing can disprove a time machine. Even that paradox.
Hynad
Mar 09 2009, 02:33 AM
Did you at least research what it is?
Anything can be disproved if nothing points in the direction of its existence.
You certainly didn't provide any proof that one does exist.
:P
Aurelia
Mar 09 2009, 02:41 AM
Yes, but at a glance.
Shut your lungs, wise ass. Can you not see that I am trying to uphold George Lucas' good name by pointing out all those copycats that lived and published their work even before Lucas was even thought of? Everything is linked to Star Wars. And I know I'm right about the time machine because I said so. My truthiness is never wrong. Besides can you even prove a time machine does not exist? We can't feel when history changes minus the person in the machine. There are still things we are uncovering that were considered legends because Western Science is an asshole and will always be.
Anyway I'm digressing: George Lucas invented everything sci fi.

Actually, I was showing my cousins FF12 for the first time and had them play the Sky Fortress Bahamut. When Gabranth showed up, they commented that he reminded them of Darth Maul because he has the two swords and jut out like Maul who had a dual lightsaber.

Why does everything thats sci-fi is being putt in the box of star wars?
Starwars is sci-fi BUT sci-fi is not starwars.

AWO, back to the Star Wars discussion
Yes it was quite obvious the characters were largely based off of Star Wars characters
It thought some were better than their Star Wars counterparts (Fran>Chewie, Balthier>Han)
And some were worse (Vader>Gabrant, R2>Vaan, C-whatever>Penelo)
Ashe was more annoying than Leia, but her rump makes up for it
But man don't make it so obvious, Square developers

Vaan = Luke "Why the Hell am I even here?" Skywalker
Ashe = Leia (without the hairdo)
Balthier = Han (obviously)
Fran = feminine Chewbacca (who can talk)
Penelo = Padme (naive and innocent)
Basch = Obi-Wan (old guy veteran type)
Vossler = Lando (as in treasonous - and I know Vossler's not black)
Gabranth = Darth Maul
Reddas = Mace Windu
Cid = Darth Sidious
Vayne = Anakin (he's the real hero of the story)

well i no Balthier was influenced by Han Solo. theirs always a Biggs and Wedge in each final fantasy or most anyways referring to the two x-wing pilots Luke was friends with. 12 may have al ot of elements like star wars but its not two much at all. i thought 12 was a very good game and if they did take a lot of elements from stars wars i could care less cause the game came out good either way imo.
