i watch the battle system part of the e3 video about 10 times over.and i noticed something, you know the 5 bars at the bottom. they looked like commands each time the woman did something one would dissapere and another would be hilighted.
you see at the end of the battle system part there were 4 commands
(Blank)> v-strike> Attack> firaga> shoot
http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/705/705718/final-fantasy-xiii-20060508032944059.jpg
v-strike was hilighted cause it had already been done, so she did attack you know what her target was cause it had a circle arround it. next she did firaga, Attack was highlighted and all the targets on the map were circled! now as ign said about the tgs video the game wil slow down and wait for your commands, this mostlikly happens when there are no commands in those slots.
what i belive happens is that you sellect the commands you do in the order that they happen(note the menu to the right). you can also change the order that these happen (left to right or right to left) by pushing a certain button(i saw that the rder was going back and forth in one scean). you can also add commands after other commands too. also you know the picture of the gun blade changing to a gun in the ps magazine, the command "shoot" was probably the next command.
and thats my theory

You have a good theory there. Want to see a full scene to confirm that this is the case.
Now, the more intresting question, are this the normal combat system or is it a limit break? The trailer chops the fight to give it the impression of higher speed, but if the entire fight is based on that you go in and out of slow-mo, it could be boring.

The trailer also doesn't move fluent enough. You see the command menu change as if she done something but what she did doesnt' match the bottom. That is only really during one part in the trailer though.
Yes, i am positive that you make up a list of commands and the game will act it out for you. Something like Star Wars: KotoR if you will, just with a lot more depth of course.

actualy i belive it only gose in slow motion when you have not given a command, that way you wont be a sitting duck when your stratagiesing. so baisicly if you keep giving commands and no slo-mo.
and desi
actualy it does, square said that some parts of the video were pre rendered and others were in real time. and if you watch the video closely you see that she is doing what it says the hilighted comman was the last command or the current command(some times the command would be highlighted during the attack) she did, the next one is the one she is doing or about to do. if you look closly at the begining of the battle system part of the video, the command after the hilighted one is "attack" witch is clearly what she is doing.

I'd agree with alot of what you've said and most of its on our battle system page :P

It has to be a combo bar sorta thing where you line up attacks. I think FF games (including XII) do seem to be taking a sort of KotOR approach like Desi said because it works pretty well.

also another thing too, it looks like the atb bar refils by attacking and killing enemies.
and another thing, i think v-strike causes slow on enemies, in the video the dog thing that jumped at her slowed down drasticly when she did it.

It's hard to tell because it seems the battle isn't in full. It looks to be cut up, you could be right about defeating enemies refills your atb gauge. But maybe it refils over time.

No the battle cut into parts. Look at the menu at the bottom. This can go to cause V strike to be about anything but all points to the slow motion.
It is highlighted several times in the trailer, but if you watch it you'll notice the commands react slow. As they disapear during the next action. We never get to see what V strike is exactly because the only time it isn't first in the menu we are on the first action in the menubar.
edit: But at the same time, when she uses the slow motion V strike is still there(pointing back to my slow menu) so it may be something there and slow motion could take affect regularly(similiar to trance). This also makes V strike look like something totally different because at the begining of the fight where she did the two hit combo into the ceiling(i originally thought was V strike) the battle isn't in slow motion.

No, take a better look, every time she have V strike, she do a vertical strike with her sword. See? She does that several times during the trailer.
Edit: Three times. One of them beeing blocked.
IGN says that: "she uses a special device that allows her to literally levitate when she's not moving, and it also lets her move faster than normal."
Would be a good idea to tell us if we can see it on the trailer...

hehe I forgot all about Overclock. Sounds and points to the slow motion/trance like system that we see in the trailer when she was surrounded.

I thought it was cut up because if you look at the atb gauge it jumps all up and down. You might only be able to see it good on the HD trailer.

yeah it is cut up. The menubar( my special name for the little command bar at the bottom) and the command wheel(special name for the menu on the side) both jump around. The command wheel even gets new choices on it instead of sliding up to it. So it all points to cut up.
And the menu bar shall be renamed the command bar!!! hahahahohoho. or action bar or something

Well, here's what you get. The following is as follows;
-
---
---- <==== your command list/menu list
-----
next to the command list (center - middle)
Information <== displays what the attacks do
--------------------------------------------------
[Blank][Attack][Attack][V-Strike][Attack] <== your current attacks being used
--------------------------------------------------
/\ Information bar lists your current informations of attacks, what your attack does etc...
the information below is as follows;
LIGHTNING (supposedly the character's name or attack name) then you see something like this;
Next to the name LIGHTNING
(bottom center)
<======ATB COST 800/800========> <== Number on left decreases when you select several attacks on the Command list. Number on right is your max number.
Top right circle is used for your Overclock mode. From what I get, when this gets activated. The action of the enemies slow down while you get to perform quick succession moves.

yeah i call the the wheel where you select spells/ablities the "command wheel" and the bar that shows actions taking place the "command bar" which you called the "attack list".

Wonder how she heals herself??? She had like 8000 HP in the trailer and I didn't see where the items(potions) or cure was?

It was the first ever page i put up :P
Thats a good point about healing. I wonder where she does keep her items. Maybe you press a shoulder button or directional button and the attack list turns into the item list or something.

hmmm, well yeah in one f the images on this site, it turns out v-strike attacks and launches enemy in to the air. in relation to that after she did the slow thing(the shock wave) v-strike was activated, it was highlighted but then attack poped up right after that, when she did the first hit then knocked the enemy in the air, v-stike dissapeared and attack was highlighted right when she kicked him in the air. so i'm guessing that some attacks will add command as the attack gose out. as in v-strike adding attack.

It could be the combinations af attacks.
Take a good look when she get blocked. The attack changes to V Strike. Wierd.
Small list of all descriptions during the trailer.
Attack: Attack one target
V Strike: Attack one target and propel them into the air
Aerial: Attack one target with an aerial maneuver

i still support the fact that orders on the command bar don't disappear during use but after you used them. it's just so inconsitent.
the point where she frooze time(which had three things set on the command bar; V strike first) and jumped off of a soldier's back(four things set; V strike first so it looks like you can actively add commands). she down slashed, backfliped, then firega(using AoE term from FFXI and XII) and shot after menu's disappeared. her commands were V Strike Attack Firega Shoot. V strike is normally before any other command(except for once) and if it was always before a command I would state it as a modifier of a melee attack. Since it was last one other time the only thing i can think of is a special manuver or something?

At the timer there is this bar around the clock that can activate the "matrix". When its filled she can begin the clock, and I guess there is a dedicated button for that.
It also begin to spell OVE.......... Something that could stand for Overdrive!
