Uh, remember, when getting the Great Gospel limit break for Aeris... you can take the buggy on the cargo ship after getting the Mythril from a cave... That probably made no sense whatsoever....

And Vincent, don't leave Nibelhelm without getting him.
And especially be sure to look for the secret scene with Cloud and Sephiroth :cunning:

If this is your first time playing - know that you are in for one of the most beautiful story's ever told. Ignore the dated graphics, this game is the pinnacle of Square's tenure.
Get Yuffie (forests) - Get Vincent (Shinra Mansion) - Make your characters rock hard and take down the Emerald and Ruby weapons.
I would tell you to breed Chocobo's, but to be honest, without a guide there isn't much point!
The best way is to play it through once just levelling and exploring - then when you play it again (because you will, it is inevitable) use a guide and be flabbergasted at what you missed!

Chocobo Sage thanks for the advice.
I already started using a guide, a friend told that I would prolly miss Yuffie so I started using it.
Who should I make in charge of summoning?

Don't give Cloud any magic apart from HP+, it ruins his potential stats.
If you insist on him using materia only give him heal/revive magic.

I gave Cloud HP+, Enemy Skill(2 skills), Cover, Poison - All, Fire and prolly 2 other materias(not magic).
Should I give up on fire and poison, maybe just poison?
And should I make Aeris a black mage and a white mage?

You could let him keep Enemy skill and cover if the magic bearer in your team is low on defense. Take away fire and poison though and give it to your magic bearer.
Not sure if you know the outcome of Aeris but lets say its best to not train her to a high level XD.
I personally had it
Cloud -About 5 HP+ (Depending on where in the game I was) and if a tough fight was coming I'd give him a little White Magic.
Tifa - Support Magic and a little white magic
Red XIII - Full Black and Full White Magic.
HoweverI played the game through countless times while using various characters but everytime Cloud performed better without any Materia apart from HP+.

maybe nagase but i like to let my player all have some magic but yes it lowers clouds HP so HP+ is essential, geuss i dont think about the outcome of the magic i used but i was ok as my player level was high on the boss battles.

Fair enough. On the tougher battles I gave him white magic but nothing more than that. It lowers his attack and defense as well if I remember rightly. It doesn't look like much in the numbers but it defiently shows bad effects in battle.

No problem Mavet,
Couple of points - there are a million ways you can spread everything out throughout your characters, and because of the relative ease upon which you can beat the game if you spend a little time levelling up, distribute how you see fit.
For the record here is my opinion, but mix and match to your hearts content mate.
Aeris - Cure + All and any other white magic. Also give her spells and summons. She handles both better that every other character.
RedXIII - Balanced magic and attack, I gave him plenty of offensive magic - Fire - Poison - Bolt -
Cloud - I like having the option with cloud to throw down some lightning and ice when I fancy it, so bolt and ice.
The rest is up to you buddy. Trust me, the less you know, the better your personal experience will be. I'm not sure how much you already know about the game, but as hard as it is, try to play it through without reading about how the story progresses in advance of playing from forums or wiki or guides.
Just wait till you start experimenting with cool materia combinations. When I realised the crazy combinations you can make with mime, counter, final attack, quadra magic and the like - it was awesome.
Counter mimeing your own limit break. Sweet.

Feb 15 2008, 07:01 PM
I don't see the point of using Ice/Bolt with cloud as his normal attack does more and using Aerith to much turns out to be a waste of time altogether.
Later on in the game elemental magic becomes nearly pointless altogether so you want Melle fighters like Cloud to take advantage of their traits and leave magic to their stronger bearers :/
Cloud has no need for black magic whatsoever unlike Cait Sith/Aerith.
That's not to say your wrong it's just saying that how the gmae played out for me everytime.

Feb 16 2008, 11:51 PM
Hey, I know Cloud is a better melee fighter, however, early in the game, it is definitely better to give some offensive materia to everyone - physical attacks pale in comparison during the first few hours.

Quite frankly, that's nonsense. You can't do any extensive levelling for most of the time you are in midgar - and if you tell me you do - the only assumption I can make is that you hang around in the few enemy spots there are for hours on end. Thanks, but no thanks. Not the experience I think should be recommended to a new player. End of.

First of all....It doesn't take harcore levelling 0_o. EXCLUDING CUT/VDIEO/shitty storyline scenes it takes no longer than 30 minutes to equal them. And i've played it since it was out and completed it many times so don't sound like such a dick just because I have different play tactics to you :wub:And wtf has being a new player got to do with it? Of course he's gonna have to train somewhere along the line, and half hour of training almost equals magic damage to his the attack damage 0_o.

I don't appreciate the way you have come accross expressing your opinion. In fact, it's just damn rude.
I don't give a toss that you have completed it X amount of times since it came out and skip cut scenes or whatever. And considering the OP is a new player I'd say it is fairly fucking relevant.
So as opposed to being an ignorant wanker, how about you do the intelligent thing and come up with the best areas to do this levelling for the benefit of the myself and the OP?
Seriously, it's the 'precious' attitudes of people like you that stop people enjoying debating on forums.

Firstly - my post was a structured rebuttal to the suggestion that one could level up to to make magic redundant for some characters.
Your suggestion was nonsense. Which means 'to make no sense'
You lowered the tone, you are the one being ignorant - is it any wonder I am frustrated at your bull headed responses?
And for this you call me a cunt? Are you twelve? Grow up.
I also never said a new player shouldn't train. In my view - the new player should enjoy the story motoring along at pace throughout midgar and then level up elsewhere when it is more fruitful.
So again, your suggestion is nonsense and I invite you - for the last time - to write a sensible rebuttal challenging my view that it is unlikely that one could level up to make magic use redundant within the first few hours of play, by giving me examples and tactics.

Damn your more persistent than halfmetal in a religon thread.
first of all i called you a cunt cos you called me a wanker (Becuase I called you dick because well frnakly you seem to be) so much love.
secondly. I never said magic gets made redundant in 30 minutes I said it ALMOST does for CLOUD, Im simply saying if you train Cloud in midgar for a while you can give the magic to the more needed players jesus ROFL.
When I get some time I'll start a new game and find the name of the place. And I never said anything about skipping video scenes, you made that up. I said EXCLUDING cut/video/ storyline from the 30 minutes.

So you called me a dick for challenging your opinion? Well quite frankly you are about as old as I estimated.
Not made up, misread - "EXCLUDING CUT/VDIEO/shitty storyline" I read to as "cutting video and skip story line"
And as you stated that you "replayed it earlier" I would have thought you would be in the position to at least describe the area and tactics that you used to level up.

guys get back on subject.
when i start play i try to level up before the first boss, and trough out midgar i train every time i get the opertunity. basicly its more cost efective it gives u more money and stops the over use of items if u have weak character that have trouble on the boss fights.

As it was a rebuttal to the concept of spending hours levelling up in midgar - I am correct in stating that it is nonsense for a new player to do such a thing as it is not necessary to enjoy the game. End of.
Clearly the concept of the word 'nonsense' is not familiar to you.
The concept of your suggestion "made no sense" to me, giving you the opportunity to rebuff this by adding examples and areas of play that are conductive to levelling in midgar, therby giving your argument weight and allowing me to see the logic behind your thinking.
Maybe you should reread a few more times to help you reply in a more constructive manner.
No love lost.

I am correct in stating that it is nonsense for a new player to do such a thing as it is not necessary to enjoy the game. End of.
1) It's nonsense to train a little bit at the start of the game? How so?
2) Training is to make your character better for the fights ahead....
3) I didn't SAY training was necessary to enjoy the game, I said it helps because you can give your magic to the people who need it....
4) I did this on my first go an enjoyed the game 0_o
5) If your suggesting training a little bit makes the game shit then I'm utterly confused :/
The Chocobo Sage
Feb 18 2008, 12:20 AM
Yay progress! I don't like arguing semantics ;)
1) This refers to my original belief that the concept you were putting forward was to spend hours levelling up.
2) Yes it is
3) I agree
4) My first experience was my first RPG - hence I wanted as much story as I could get and levelled up outside the chocobo ranch and Kalm. However, I did of course do some levelling in midgar
5) No, my original counter argument was that I believed point 1 - which would make it a bit shitty.
So clearing up the confusion - you have already stated that you do not spend hours levelling up - 30 minutes was the guestimate you gave, and the notion that I dismissed as nonsense was one advising another player to spend hours levelling instead of following in the story, the very one you denied doing thus correcting my original belief.
So, moving on to the crux of the issue: where and when in the begining couple of hours of the game is the best place to achieve getting cloud to the point where his physical attacks match -or almost match- those of the offensive magic this in this estimated 30 minute time frame?
Thanks x

Nagase is right about Cloud being better as a Fighter-type (no spells and all), but to be honest the game isn't difficult enough to get you worried over how you build-up your characters/Materia.
However yeah, if you want to "perfect" your characters... Vincent and Red XIII have the best Magic stat (Red XIII leads by a short margin), Yuffie has high dex, Cait Sith has the highest Luck (but crappy stats for the most part). Tifa, Barret and Cid I don't remember though :(

to all new FF7 players dont bother reading the posts here, youl just get even more confused ahahaah
It depends on you, the way you play FF7, thats the beauty of the game, can be played in many ways, and Nagase and Csage have their own ways..
I my self just put magic on all of them thru the game, cause it made me spend less time mastering the materias at the end, and magic helped me al the way.
Has for leveling, i just used to stop in the place Nagase said, near the Wall Market and Aerith's house, then i stoped at the ghost train aeria where i would steal a good weapon Stricking Staff" i think for Aerith, then up in the shinra Tower, and steal a "Hard Edge" for Cloud, and honestly the game just becomes easy from there, just because Cloud ends up with a weapon he is only meant to have when you 1st go to Gongana Village.
Any comments? :)

well when i fought emerald weapon underwater i had to worry about the materia buildup on everyone cause every attack he made was 9999. i could teach you the best materia buildup that you could get for cloud. for one, they are right, dont put much materia on cloud in the begining cause it messes with his stats. use aerith to lvl the materia up. but tell me when you get to the end and you have everyone at lvl 99 and ill give you helpful hints on ruby weapon in the desert too.
Eidolon Sniper
Apr 13 2008, 05:55 AM
LOL Emerald Weapon. XD that attack it does with 9,999 damage a hit, something-Storm, is proportional to how many Materia you have on your person. So if you have 5 Materias each, he'll do 9,999 damage 5 times in succession, or 5 X 3 times, and you're literally dead with that. Also, before trying to take on Emerald/Ocean Weapon be sure to get the Underwater Materia first...if you didn't the timer would start kicking in, like for 20 seconds only or something. This Materia could be gained by Morphing those Ghost Ships in that underwater tube-hallway thing. Of Course the Morph would gain you the Guide Book (or was it the map? O.O;; ). Take that object to the Old Man in Kalm and he'll reward you with the Underwater Materia.
The best character for Morphing items could either be Yuffie or Cloud (once his Dex stats are OK enough). Yuffie + Oritsuru = I had fun Morphing Tonberries into Ribbons with this combo. XD Take time out to locate Cactuar Island and Morph the Cactuars into armlets which either let you absorb fire, ice, lightning magic or halve them. Cloud could also be a decent Magic user....equip Circlet on him (or was it Tiara?) which could either be stolen or Morphed (?) from monsters either in the vicinity or near the vicinity of the Northern Crater. I got Cloud's Magic stat to 255 that way. XD and it does help if you feed him all the Magic Sources you see along the way, lol. XD Take time out to grab the Phoenix Materia, the Kjyata Materia, the Typhoon Materia, and the next form of Bahamut (the insect-like Bahamut after the first Bahamut that you get), and of course, our beloved Bahamut ZERO - they're missable items. Take time to learn Mighty Guard, White Wind and Angel Whisper - they would really help you along the way, especially if you're going against the Weapons. I find that using Hyper on an unaffected character would make him go into Fury status, which builds up his or her Limit Break Gauge faster. If you want to level up faster, it's either you hit Northern Crater or the Gelnika for your training sessions - the monsters here are very insanely strong. That is you only do this when you're near the end of the game or something before fighting the final bosses and thinking of going against the Weapons.
Also, it helps a lot if you properly train yourself before big boss fights - like learning Limit Breaks that you can learn at your current level. I think I already had Cloud and his Level 3 Limit Breaks on just Disc One, lol. XD not only would this help you defeat bosses faster, it would also help you to learn your final Limits faster. You could get Aerith's weapon, the Fairy Rod (or was it the Aurora Rod O.O ;; ), by stealing from one of the enemies in the train graveyard area - this weapon could be bought in a store far away from Midgar, that shows how stealing this rod is quite a bargain in itself even before you hit that store to buy that weapon - the weapon is strong at least until you reach that part of the world where it could be bought. The enemy from which this could be stolen looks like it has a gigantic parasol, or looks like a chariot....ToT sorry, it was already too long since I played FF VII, I could barely remember it. Stock up on a reasonable amount of Potions and Ethers early in your game - you really couldn't say if your training session could get awry and you need easy refilling of HPs and MPs, and this even applies to boss fights. Before you know it you already have 99 items each in your inventory, no need to do a side trip towards any stores that have these on your journey, at least until you feel the need to restock. For easy X Potions, steal or Morph the lightning bird monsters you find in Wutai. Also, if you already have the Morph Materia and Steal Materia, Morph and Steal like crazy. You never know what kind of item you could get from them - I found about Tonberries and Ribbons this way. Suffice it to say, I got slaughtered pretty much for Morphing Tonberries, but it was well worth it lol. XD
