New Square-Enix MMORPG in Development

Square-Enix has already confirmed they will be appearing at this years Games Developers Conference in San Francisco and now one of their talks entitled "The Technology of Final Fantasy" has been revealed on the GDC website. The talk presented by Square-Enix's Taku Murata will be about Square-Enix's White Engine, the engine behind Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. The engine has apparently been further developed to be used in a new MMO to be announced by Square-Enix which could possibly be a new Final Fantasy title or even the unanounced Final Fantasy Haeresis XIII.

Just to reaffirm the fact that the White Engine runs exclusivly on the Playstation 3 but it may have been further developed by other teams at Square-Enix to work on multiple platforms. This in no way means that either FFXIII or Versus are going multiplatform. Had to say that because it seems any mention of "FFXIII" and "development" cause a "Final Fantasy XIII going to 360!" rumor.

So yeah, I believe they have to develop this engine to work multiplatform, since releasing a new MMO exclusively for the PS3 would be an extremely risky move. MMOs are much more popular on PC for several reasons, and many MMO players don't like games/console gaming at all.
Other than that we already knew about SE working on a new MMO for a while now, but they never released any more info on it for a long time.

360 is old news. They've run out of their technology so long ago, not to mention, running an MMO on that thing would definately make it's system break. More RRoD ftw! And I know XI ran on it but this is a Next-Gen game we're talking about here.

As for the game itself, XI was fun, but it got boring really fast. I just expected so much more. Hopefully they can get this one right. Platforms: PS3 and PC (Nextbox in 4 yrs):D

It's true that the game is a little rough on newbies, but nowadays there is plenty of tutorials on the official website.
FFXI is pretty good, once you are past the early experiences. It still is my favorite MMORPG to date.

However, based on the financial size of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Compilation, it is most popularly assumed that the new MMO may be a part of this compilation, possibly even the fourth planned title in the XIII series thus far, Final Fantasy Haeresis XIII.

As a result of this, it is important to note that Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII are still PS3 exclusives. According to an April 2006 report from Gamespot.com, SE Producer Hiromichi Tanaka confirmed that the new MMO is currently in development "for Windows Vista and the PS3". Based on this knowledge, it is safe to assume that the only uncertainty around which systems the new MMO will be for is towards a release on the Xbox 360. One possible direction SE may take is by duplicating the publishing techniques used in FFXI, which saw the game come out for PC and PS2 first, and then release a version for the 360 a few years later.

This is one possible outcome, but again, no confirmation of the new MMO being on the Xbox 360 has of yet been released.

There is quite a bit of speculation as to whether the new MMO would be coming to the Xbox 360 as well. Some sources say it is, others say it isn't. Even Tanaka himself in that very same report mentioned the possibility of developing the MMO for the 360. However the only really hard evidence I've seen to support the new MMO coming to the 360 is a statement from an RPGamer interview with the Square-Enix PR department in June of 2007. In this interview, Charlie Sinhaseni is asked and responds to the following question:

I know you can't tell us when Final Fantasy XIII is coming or whether it's going to go multiplatform, but maybe we can ask something you can answer. Are there any plans for more Xbox 360 support other than what has been announced?

Charlie: Well, we have already stated that the next Final Fantasy MMO will be for the 360 and Vista. That, along with continued support for Final Fantasy XI such as Wings of the Goddess, show that we will be working with the 360 quite a bit. Don't forget Project Silpheed and Last Remnant.

This would lead us to now assume that the new MMO is in development for the Xbox 360 as well, however, due to the fact that the new MMO has not been officially announced as a Final Fantasy, it is uncertain as to whether this title that Sinhaseni refers to is the subject of this thread or not. The lack of mentioning the PS3 also stirs up speculation amongst the validity of this remark.

Regardless, I was personally under the impression that FFXIII Haeresis and "Rapture" are NOT the same game. Of course, SE working on 2 new MMOs at the same time does sound a bit farfetched. But there has yet to be any information linking the two, other than the fact that they're both MMOs in development.

First, unlike most it seems, I liked FFXI a lot.

In the video for rapture the character designs look a lot alike the ones from FFXI. I wonder if they will use the same world but years later, or if it is just demo people to not give things away and show the worlds. Hard to tell if it's futuristic, modern, or medieval. Maybe they'll include instances this time (FFXI's only drawback for me)!!!! Can't wait to see the MMO, or MMO's if that be the case.

as far as we know Haeresis and the next gen MMO are not the same.,..but it could end up that Haeresis XIII is the MMO...if that were the case, then you would end up with one game, not two...otherwise, they are two seperate games and Haeresis is not an MMO.

FFXI is a widely played game that alot of ppl hate when they play for 30minutes and are stuck not knowing what to do or have no abilities that pertain to their jobs <.<. Its an awsome game once you get past the the dunes and such and actually start getting into the monumentaly VAST storyline in it. They have 4 expansions now, each with a unique and immersive background and story to them. So for ppl to say "i played it for 15minutes and it sucks" is just to be ignorant and admit that you couldnt stick with a game any longer. No other FF game will be found to have as much replayability(18+ jobs to lv 75) and just raw play time. If they stick to the basics that made XI great, and improve upon them graphicaly, and make a few tweaks to money making then it will be the most popular MMO out for years to come. And if anyone wants to think I'm biased bout the game w/e. Those that think that, sit down and play it for more than 15minutes, maybe give it a week and meet ppl then spew your random crap bout the game.

I wouldn't murder SE for putting in existing cities/towns in their FFMMORPG's

I'd probably love them for it.
They don't need to have NPC's from the titles but cities would be nice.

Really though, there's no point in dwelling on it now. There's a new MMO, and there are plenty of other titles from square and plenty of big-scale titles that are ps3 exclusive.

It's great though since that whole dome like building looks like that little theater in Luca where you could buy music and videos and such..

..They should really have made a city with big buildings and such..
But FFXI looked more *fairytale* like than any other of the FF's.

What's this about an MMOFFX. I've been hearing that this was to do with Haeresis XIII ( not that we know anything about it). I havent seen the vid yet but i'll try downloading it from google. The video that we have up in this thread is "apparently" a test video of w/e engine they are using for the next-gen MMO. Of course that's all just what we think from it. Also the characters in said video appear to be models from FFXI in a Luca-ish scenery "from the past." Most is just what ifs and what wed like to see *shrug*. yup, models are from FFXI..However, this was WAAAY back in 2005. The MMO (whatever it ends up being) is using Crystal Tools now (same engine as XIII and Versus XIII)

Yeah but the graphics in that video look like its on that engine, or atleast an earlier version of it. looks like a beefed up version of the graphics from XII. either way w/e the game is about, the graphics will almost 100% be comparable to XIIIs. beautiful looking MMOs mean alot compared to single player >< alot of ppl want to play a gorgeous online game. just hope they make it a good overall game, whenever they do get around to it xD *looks at calendar and marks somewhere around 2010

I've never played FFXI since I never took the time to get all of the stuff for it ( I have one of the 3 titles that's just sitting there -.-) and probably won't since people say it ins't great compared to other top MMORPGs (e.g. WOW), but i'm definitely interested on how this one turns out seeing as it seems close FFX I guess.

umm.. i think youre mistaking things a bit...Using an engine doesnt mean youre going to make a game thats similar...Crystal Tools essentially handels the graphics...but you could make whatever you want with it..kinda like how Lost Odyssey is NOTHING like Gears of War, but its using the same Graphics engine.

I'm glad i posted that video, it seemed to spark interests, even if it's from 2005 lolll. A MMO thats looks like that video or better will change MMO gaming forever. The only thing they really have to do is add epic gameplay, because i know they are capable of those graphics.

-The back and fourth communication with the fans has made FFXI successful.

-Problem with Japanese market compared to EUR/US is that it hasn't changed much. Doesn't move as fast as EUR/US with each new console generation.

-Upcoming MMO differnt than FFXI. Same team that worked on FFXI is working on new MMO. So they'll use what they learned for next game. Aiming for something different from the beginning.

-Not meant to replace FFXI. They want both games to exist in same world.(as in Earth) Without one replacing the other

-As long as gamers keep playing FFXI they will continue to make content. And that regards to future expansions which will be delivered as patches for now.

-Can't say anything else about the future MMORPG

i spent about 4 years of my life on FF11, now i just dont have time to play, as simple as that, i still pay the monthly fee in the hopes that il be able to pick it up some day.

I loved playing, in fact i was addicted for a bit, the events of the game take alog time to complete, and you need to stay up long nights.

If this new MMORPG ends up beeing better then FF11, then i might let it go.

Tanaka lies. The FFXI devs dont' talk to us. They just slide their way out of questions.

I am excited that expansions are getting throw into patches in the future. Only Rise of the Zilart and to a lesser extent Treasues of Aht actually required an expansion disc. Chains and now Wings are just giant patches that cost 29.99 to get. All the equipment was avaliable to everyone it was just the areas and jobs that were locked.

All I ask is that Naoshi keep releasing great music for FFXI.

Have you ever tried a debit card? I love them and find them 200% better than a credit card. You only spend your money thats in the bank and you don't have to pay interest (at least at my bank). Just got to remember to put money in or you might bounce and that could be bad ; ;
