Yes, it's a GREAT show. The writing, acting, cinematography, CGI (and how the cinematography and CGI compliment one another) are all amazing.

It's set in space, but it doesn't really have the feel of Star Trek or Star Wars. It's very dark, and to me feels a little more like Lost (but I think it's far better. I quit Lost, lol). The basic premise is a little similar to The Matrix. Humans create robot slaves called Cylons. The cylons rebel and kick our butts. We fight a big war and finally sign a treaty. Then the cylons disappear for 40ish years until they show back up and kill all the humans but about 40,000 who happened to be on space ships that were able to evade the attacks. One of the ships is a military vessel called Battlestar Galactica. All that happens in the pilot.

The rest of the show is about the remaining humans trying to pick up the pieces of their lives while constantly on the move from the cylons who are relentlessly pursuing them to finish them off and end the human race. Oh, and to further complicate things, the cylons have found a way to make cylons that don't look like robots but look exactly like humans. But the women aren't difficult to spot because they all look like super models, but for some reason the characters never figure that out. So the cylons sometimes are able to infiltrate the human vessels with the human-looking cylons.

Oh, and the humans in this show are from 12 planets named after the 12 signs of the zodiac and NOT from Earth. Earth is considered by most to be only a myth, but it is referred to in their religious text, so they try to find Earth as their last hope of finding a home. And for some unknown reason (which adds an element of mystery), the cylons want to find earth too.

I would not recommend jumping in and watching with this new season because you're not going to know what the heck is going on. I would start by renting the miniseries which served as the show's pilot to see if you are interested. :)

The show actually sounds pretty cool. Maybe I can find the first season on youtube or veoh and just watch it during summer break and catch up to whatever the current season may be now. Thanks for giving me a bit of a synopsis about the show :)
