View Full Version : What would you name him?
Dark Remnant
Dec 18 2007, 11:16 PM
OK so as we all know the main character for FF Versus XIII is yet to be named by SE so what I want to know is that if it were 100% your decision and nobody else's as to what his name would be...what would you name him and why?
Naunen
Dec 18 2007, 11:36 PM
I'd name him Sky.
Dark Remnant
Dec 18 2007, 11:47 PM
Why Sky?
I'd name him Somnus because out of all the speculated names I think that suits him best.
Naunen
Dec 18 2007, 11:51 PM
It seems like a deep name. The Nomura Final Fantasy's have weather names. Cloud, Squall, and Tidus (sunshine), so why not? The sky can either be blue, grey, and black. The sky's unaffected by weather but we think so because we see things go over it.
Dark Remnant
Dec 18 2007, 11:56 PM
I think the weather/elements type theme for names should be left out for this one, it's just getting old now.
Naunen
Dec 18 2007, 11:56 PM
They didn't leave out Lightning. o.o
Dark Remnant
Dec 18 2007, 11:59 PM
That doesn't mean I agree with the name plus it could be changed at any time as SE have said before.
Naunen

----I don't agree with Somnus either. Besides, wouldn't it be Nomura's final Final Fantasy compilation?
Dark Remnant
Dec 19 2007, 12:05 AM
Apparently so, I still think that going along with the weather/elements theme is a bad idea for this particular game as it seems a complete opposite to FFXIII.
Naunen
Dec 19 2007, 12:10 AM
What else kinda name would suit the guy? I'd still say Sky 'cause that name's technically not used by a Final Fantasy yet. But that's only an opinion and I'm simply answering the thread with my own decision.
Dark Vincent
Dec 19 2007, 03:11 AM
Lol Maybe I'm reading it wrong but... why do you make a thread asking for opinions if you don't accept them? D: Sky is cool, Somnus is also cool. Since it's a spin-off of the main series (like X-2, Tactics, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, etc.) I wouldn't discard the possibility of having an unrelated name (though Zack did have Fair as his last name, which is a reference to weather) but it's not completely ruled out either. As for my opinion, something related to Gray/Silver/Argentum, maybe Gray itself could be the name, or Grey. :)

I'd sayaHe should be named MisterMan
Maiya
Dec 19 2007, 04:41 AM
Well... Actually, I'd call him Sutomu Agito. I think that's how you would spell Storm in Romanji, but I'm not sure. The name has just stuck with me. Yeah, I know Agito is the name for the cellphone game, but I thought it sounded good with him. Though, I wouldn't like for his name to be Storm in English, I still like how it's pronounced in Japanese.
Whiplash
Dec 19 2007, 04:47 AM
I'd call him Othello seeing as Nomura's calling this game a Shakespearean tragedy.
Naunen
Dec 19 2007, 05:19 AM
Let's see... Cloud has some fuzzy memory and a rather clouded mind; Squall is a short-lived sudden storm and the guy does freak out at people just like that depending on situations, Tidus is a bright outgoing guy and his colours (blue and yellow) show cheeriness so he's like the sunshine on blue skies; and... *looks at Versus guy* We don't know much about him except that he at the moment is wearing black, has silver hair, and his eyes change colour but it doesn't change him. That's my full reason for the name Sky. The sky's always there, clouds go over it, it changes colours depending on the sun and stars but if it weren't for the things we see it'd actually be space-black. Hmmm...
Patsie
Dec 19 2007, 08:21 AM
I call forth the name Spatula for him.
But what you said, Naunen, Sky is a pretty good name. The sky do change colours a lot. On sun sets it gives out indigo, orange etc colours. Pretty good..
Naunen
Dec 19 2007, 08:23 AM
Spatula. :cunning:
Soldier: Oh noes!! It's teh Spatula! Ruuuun for yo' lives!!!

I suggest for you to name him Spatula in your comic. :cunning:

Nah, I don't wanna give him a name in my comic.
Maiya
Dec 19 2007, 09:02 AM
Wow. You really do have a good reason for naming him Sky. But say you put his name into Japanese. Would you have his named be translated as Sora or still Sky , like as Sukai? Or something like that... Aha, I have nothing to back up the name I chose for him, but I stick by it anyway.

Kaze = wind
I couldnt remember the word for 'strong' or 'harsh'.

Haha! I wish! But I am going to Japan in the summer of 2008. Don't think that counts as living in Japan, but close enough. Off topic a bit, but I also think Somnus would be a cool name for the king. But I wonder is he a king or a prince?
Naunen
Dec 19 2007, 09:27 AM
He's a prince. He's part of the king's lineage and the last heir to the throne. Quite young from the looks to be a king. I think Somnus sounds too much like a clairvoyant named him. O.o

James VI of Scotland was about 10 when he was crowned. I can't remember his exact age but he was pretty much a kid.
Which throws in the possibility of a power hungr regent :cunning:

But don't they call him a king in the song? Also, does it matter how old you are to be a king? I mean he is the last? So, wouldn't that make him king? Nergh, yeah I guess so, I think I'm just going on names, because of how good it sounds. Well, whatever SE chooses, I'm sure it'll be good. They always think of names that suit the character.

----I'm thinking it'd be different for his kingdom. He's the crown prince. =D I read in a magazine and interview that he is not the king but a part of the king's lineage and he is the last heir to the throne. In that order.

I'm not disputing that he's not the king, I was just pointing out one of many historical examples that proved age is irrelevant to being a king.
Maiya
Dec 19 2007, 09:38 AM
Well, I hope he is called a prince. I was thinking about if he was considered a prince or king. Realized that he sounded to awkward to be recognized as a king. Like King Sky or King Somnus. Prince Sky or something along those lines sounds much better. And I think I learned about King James VI. But how would I know, I'm not that educated! Well, somewhat, just not to fond of history.

You may have, he's better known as King James I of England, first of the Stuarts and successor to Queen Elizabeth I. It was his son, Charles I, that was king when the civil war happened.
Completely off topic but eh.
Maiya
Dec 19 2007, 09:46 AM

Naunen
Dec 19 2007, 09:56 AM
And a whole lotta Roman numerals. I wonder how he got to be the last heir. You'd think he's got siblings or some family left in the city.
Maiya

Maybe they were killed off? I could imagine him having and older sibling. Watch his name is like King Storm XXXXXIII or something...

Yeah it is, it could also be alotta other words.
I heard Tidus is "Sun" in Latin.
Sky seems deep, but it sounds way too homo in Japanese for such a hawt guy -sorry- It cant sound japanese either cuz that would just not fit the setting of the story.
I like "Divine"

ROFLMAOTidus is Wave in latin. Sol (or Solaris, I forget) is Sun in Latin.
EDIT: Actually nvm Tidus is not wave in latin. Some person on some forum said Tidus is old japanese for sun, but that has as much credibility as me saying Tidus is wave in latin. The Japanese/English dictionary didn't have a meaning for Tidus, I can't find it anywhere either.

Somnus has been a speculated name for a while, it was the name of a giant who slept all the time or some shit. I can't really remember.
Ringlets
Dec 19 2007, 05:48 PM
According to Wiki, Somnus (known as Hypnos) is the personification of sleep (who's half brother is death 0_o ). I can see how that would fit in with the whole idea of him always sat half sleeping in the trailers, but surely the idea of Greek Mythology in an FF would be more apparent in the earlier trailers.
Dark Remnant
Dec 19 2007, 05:50 PM
Well I knew is was something to do with sleep, that's why it's been a speculated name for a while, because we see the character seemingly asleep in the trailers.

Right. Which is exactly why I decide to call him Storm, but Sutomu in Japanese instead. I was just saying the actual Japanese word, Arashi, didn't fit him. So, if they do choose the name Storm for him, I'll be happy. Think he'll have a last name?
