View Full Version : What makes an avatar "good"?

Lately, all my avatars suck and I want some advice on how to make them better. Say nothing about changing the content of the image at all. One thing about being an artist is that one can draw their own avatars and such. xD
So, anyway... what makes a "good" avatar? What can I do? Suppose I finish a drawing. What effects would you suggest?

O______O;; wtf is he playing at lol...
hey Naunen, dont undermine urself. Your drawings are awesome, but I think ppl still focus on the GFX aspects of the avv. So why not show us ur talent in the form of sketchs? =D
[P.S. for me, as long as u have Cloud it'll make a > 8/10 minimum]

----Everyone's playing with another person's artwork in their avas and sigs. o.o They do fancy effects and borders and texts. I'm not sure how to incorporate those into my art without providing fan service like fanart of people I don't really like.

I should so put that set back up. :cookie:
Eh, an avatar can be look nice, but it's only as good as you think it is, imho. If you like what you're using, then it's good enough for you.

----Well, you should see the Rate Each Others Sigs or Avas threads. You'll see what I mean. People don't really draw their own and rate them highly too even though it's someone else's art. Know what I mean?

----That bastard probably didn't read the part where it said "without changing the image." Like hell I'm drawing fan service of people like him. o.O

Well...I don't know. Experiment with colours and such to get that 'wow' factor -- the kind that makes you look and stare. On how to get that, I can't really explain, everyone has a different style, whether it be traditional art or digital, and it pretty much depends on you. You could also ask people what they think of the avatars you make and after awhile you'll get an idea of what most people are looking for in an avatar.

put some shading into it and it would be awesome also fill in the background . just to give a more vibrant feel to it, but i would advise doing it in pencil as i think color makes drawings look cheesy and not very detailed. thats just my opinion.

----With the way I colour, no details are omitted because covering details are my peeves. Also, you don't know what my penciling looks like. It's crap.

I used to be like that xD
It was simply line drawing and thats it.
But it's always good it experiment with shading and different styles.
Also ranging HB's are good, such as HB to 5B?
You get some great shading effects if you incorperate some blending and shading by using tissue or tortillions. (even if they do cost 1.50 each D;<)
But its always best to experiment, otherwise you don't builds your skills quicker (usually) but it would be great to see some of your work shaded, it would make it definatly stand out.
(Yea...i totally went off course of the topic...my bad :cunning:)

----Way off topic. All I say is, I have my image done: the content of the avatar. What else should be done without embellishing the finished image? Like effects and all. I'm not having anyone tell me what and how I draw but more what I should do to make an attractive avatar.

I hate colour in my pictures too, I can never get them to look right.
And you should try shading one of your pictures Naunen.

----Nah. I'm not talking about the drawing but the avatar look. What makes an avatar "good" without changing the drawing itself? Seems people haven't read about what I said regarding the image content.

----Cut-outs? That's all? Man, there are too many meanings where the word "render" is concerned. I did look at examples but it didn't fit in to how everyone described it. Digital cut-outs? It's to make it easier to make your own background, huh? Like that?

----Kid, why don't you? God, it's like parents putting their kids in front of the tv and hoping that they are considered babysitting the damn kid. Besides, you're off topic yourself. Anyway, I know the proper meaning of render now. Not like it helps with making avatars look good.

It makes some Avatars look better. Like my old MC one, it looked nice.
On others, it looks like crap, like the one i have now.>_<

----I doubt it'd help me considering my art style. I learned the "cut-out" render is actually not the proper meaning of "render." No wonder I was confused. Anyway, I won't try "rendering." But I will try to "flesh" render the drawings.
