Sep 13 2007, 10:31 PM
That looks great, Cathryn. The textures on the armor is wonderful.

I don't think the skin tone for the person on the left is too dark, though. It just needs a bit more shading and definition to accentuate 'what is the middle tone'. Take a look at your avatar, for example; there are a variety of darks and lights, but you can still tell that Yuna has a lighter skin tone.

If I might say, you may want to try out direct 3/4th lighting (like the one in your signature) - meaning not lighting from the direct back, front, or side of the character. With this lighting scheme, the forms will definitely be easier to pull out and define.

I'm offically pissed off now.
My mum will NOT let me have Heavenly Sword until i finish my work, which wont happen until the end of next week D: "FUCK YOU COURSEWORK!!!"

So i stormed off in the garden and started ripping up the grass like a tit and then got all moody, and when my mum came out and asked me if i wanted to go to an Anne Summers party with her just so i could go flap dildo's and try on costumes with her, i was like "FU" (literally)

So this is where....THIS comes in...and all that crap above i wrote started this shiz.
Taken from a screenshot im expressing my 'phished offness' through nariko's PMT. ;D

Hey that's awesome! Great values.

What I often do is just very lightly lay down values as to where the shadows are. Then I build the shading up from that, knowing before-hand where the values are going to be. It's a light-to-dark and efficient method of shading that's pretty good for pencils.

Keep up the good work, and don't kill your mum. :P

I've been working on the hair all day. Quite frankly im just getting pissed off with it because its not turning out right.
I'm just on the verge of irritated. (Honest :halo: - I'm not bashing stuff yet...)

(And yes i still haven't got Heavenly Sword, so i'm still dwelling in depression, pulling up grass, generating violence towards by mum by perferably chucking knifes and pencils by only leaving a small amount of trama and the possibility of mental scaring, but i'm on the possibility of getting a Crisis Core PSP Pack, so +10 Superness for me. But...i want Heavenly Sword. <_<)

Yea...i'm so going to dwell in the garden once i've posted this. *lingering depression* >_<

I had a go at darkneing her, but i've pretty much beaten the paper down so i can't do anymore. (Need new sketch book/BETTER PAPER :\)
I'm so going to have to buy a Wacom Tablet, but i've just bought Corel Painter so i can't really afford a Wacom Tablet. So i've got some work cut up because i seriously need to get into using Painter if i want any chance of being able to apply for where i want to go :\.
I've got to send in an aplication by the end of the year, and then after college IF i get my A levels, i can send in a portfolio.

FREAKIN ACADEMIC PRESSURE.

New Crap

Sunny from MGS4, i started it during school so i had to run off my memory, but i left it in the Locker room and some bugger trod on it and made a nice shoe imprint.

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/4603/sunnysy0.jpg

Also i might start doing some serious anatomy sketching in spare time during this week (Work experience D:) My anatomy is definatly not even near that good, and also their are some parts of the body which i cannot for my life draw very well (usually hands, legs and feet)
But these are random squiggles during triple physic's which proved my point on my lack of anatomy skills xD.
+ my friends kept drawing stupid little dinosaurs. >_>

From Maiki's (is that the right spelling?) description and drawings of the new characters i decided to elaberate on the female. ;D and Storm....xD

Good progress, Cathryn. I have a few points I would like to make:
1) If you're considering buying a Wacom Tablet, I definitely suggest trying to master - or at least have a lot of experience - in using it with Photoshop. Corel Painter, from what I've heard, is a nasty program to master. It's not a bad program, but - again from what I've heard - it's very difficult to control. On the other hand, Photoshop is much more straightfoward. The brushes are easy to use.
2) This is just me, but I actually don't use sketchbook paper lol. I find that, although it's thicker and consequently less likely to fold, it breaks down easily when extensively smudged/erased on. On the other hand, regular computer paper, although it's flimsier, doesn't wear down as easily under extensive smudging because the surface is smoother. By simply laying masking tape down on the edges to restrain it from flipping, it's really ideal for quicker renderings/studies. I would just use sketchbooks for travel situations.
3) For anatomy, the best way to learn is to learn something new each time you study. "Oh! So that's how it works!" "Okay: so that muscle is there because it allows the elbow to bend." I'm not exactly the anatomy expert myself, but because I'm passionate, I can retain the information I learn each time.

ZOMG Trojan Text Wall! I hope that helps.

D; To much WRITING

It does help, much love ;D <3
Also i agree on the paper, i had a fiddle around with some printing paper and it was ten times better, definatly alot smoother and damn durable.

I got a chance to use a Wacom tablet today and also inDesign and CS3, and they where all awesome, but it's hard to pick up the fundmentals of it, but because the guy's im working with basically live with digital art, its been great learning from them and also being explained how to use a Wacom Tablet correctly, but i still can't use it well, xD ok, it was 6 hours messing on a tablet and chatting about Guitar Hero III, but it was brilliant because i never would of picked up what i got explained on my own.
I also sat there and was able to help on a brochure design, which was pretty cool, 28 pdf pages D8 and 6 hours on my ASS!
Yea, i so can't feel it, and im not even lying. xD

there is alot of talent on here and some not so talent on here

There are also a lot of obnoxious comments going around. They're so obnoxious, in fact, that I can not only see them, but smell them as well. Funny - my computer doesn't normally produce stimuli that would affect my nose.

Yurian

u know wat ur a jerk and if u dont like my comments then dont read them kay cause ur acting like a snob and no ones forcing u to read them u can have ur opinions and i can have mine so shove it bizitch:nag:

I think you should remove your comments to an area that is more appropriate i.e the spam section. This area is for comments concerning art, not for off-key opinions that are unhelpful to others. If you don't like something, it would be far more appropriate to post at least a critique, and not a negative inference to someone's ability.

EDIT: If you want to argue with me, then send it in a pm. I'm not going to concentrate Cathryn's topic with mindless blabble that shouldn't have happened in the first place.

I think it looks good as well. Maybe a suggestion of a shoulder blade could be included so that her right arm doesn't look like it's 'pasted 'on. In addition, her left upper arm seems rather long as well.

I think you've got the overall shape/form of the anatomy - and you're great at posing the characters - but some of the proportions seem off. Keep up the good work.

Naunen

Nicely done pose. Her left upper arm's a bit long and her left forearm tapers too thin though.

Yea i see what you mean, xD
The torso was a bit fustrating aswell, it doesnt match with the position of her back so i'll have a fiddle with that later on aswell.

I can't determine what she's holding in her right hand nor do I see any way of what's propping up her right weapon. Is it supposed to be on her shoulder? I don't see.
Also, proportionately, her hands are too small.

Käthe
Oct 13 2007, 10:33 PM
It was intended for her just to be holding it up basically, i did think about placing it on her shoulder, but it was already fustrating on creating that position, i didn't really think twice about changing it. I might do.
The right hand weapon hasn't been finished yet, but still, all anybody can say is wtf is that, which is understandable. xD

I've been doing alot of anatomy studies. ALOT.

I need to considering i'm studying Käthe Kollwitz for my GCSE MOC's, i need to get Hands and Facial features figured out well due to the art she produced (German expressionism, The great Depression, Post War etc...)

I think i've gotten eyes down well enough, i've had to look at people from diffferent angles, but it's been hard considering when i stared at them for too long, they spotted me and where sitting there thinking 'wtf are you doing"
I had to go sulk off in a corner every time that happened. :cunning:

I'll just post this for now, only because there is alot more and i really don't want to scan them right now. xD *lazy*

I know what you mean, they both in the correct position, but i just need to bring the left eyeball down a tad. But i can always work a on positioning correctly.

Started a Catherine Zeta Jones picture, figured i'd start to get used to using Tortillons and Mechanical pencils more.
2 Hours of pure honest labour onto that damn head, and i've still got the lips and a few touch ups to finish. xD

That's amazing, seriously. Her pose, her expression, everything. It looks really realistic. Just a couple things, the eyes are a little off -- the shapes of them, I mean, and that they don't quite match, and that the shading might be a tad dark because typically skin isn't that dark, especially since she's not Asian or African etcetcetc.

I'm jealous. T_T

For both, the hair shading looks awesome. The matching poses also give a sort of 'First Man First Woman' interpretation as well.
In terms of critiques: http://preventdisease.com/home/muscleatlas/shtraplat.jpg The picture shows the muscles 'Trampezius' and 'Latissimus Dorsi', two muscles that are kind of vague within your drawings. Right now - it's more apparent in the male than in the female (she has boobs :D) - the pectoral muscles are located on a more cylindrical plane - curving around on the ribcage - rather than remaining relatively flat on the front of the ribcage. If you look at yourself naked in the mirror, for example, while raising your arms, you can still see the trampezius that is located on your back.

I started a versus doujin, but then i relized i have no time, shitty anatomy skills, and tons of unfinished coursework.
So i gave up, then cried a bit because i relized it will never happen until i finish school and until my anatomy is up to stratch.

Instead of writing out my Versus story, i switched to a doujin, it would have been alot more eaiser to show rather than place a whole page of crappy grammer instead.
D: But this wont happen for a good few months, because i suck xD.

There's always practising like hell, Cathryn. Till the fingers bleed. It's looking good so far though I suggest a different panel layout.

Haha, i've been banned from the Art Room at school. :cookie:
Because i deliberatly put orange chalk on my face and ran around singing the Oompa Loompa song. xD So I've had hour long sessions in a separate room from everybody else. ;P Been practising ass loads, im in there for another week, so i should be (well hopefully) improving because i've got a nice amount of time to myself ;D.

Very nice, the hands especially. The only thing that's harder to draw than hands is feet and even then it's a close call, but the hands are perfect.

The first one's nice and thoughtful. The second one's awesome. x3 Nothing can look cooler than someone reloading. Hope you finish these.

Ah, they took forever, and i'm still not sure about the thumbs position. xD
And these will definatly get finished, as they go towards one of my 2 A4 portfolio's for my college interview >D

The thumb on the bottom hand does look a little strange but I think it's mainly due to the finger next to it. Still miles better than I could do, I tend to have conviniently place objects hiding hands and feet.

The second one is awesome, Cathryn. I don't really have any critiques. Coming from my opinion, and the fact that people can have it differently, I've noticed in some of your sketches that the eyes' placement seem somewhat higher. Maybe it's me lol.

I think that the eyes do look a little higher but I think that is looks fine, gives your sketches a unique quality I guess.

Ahh.
I messed her head up, its insanely large, but at the time this examiner who was in our Art MOC was talking to me saying how much she liked my work.
I was like "lul...ok, can i go back to dra-" *GASPINATE* "LOOK AT HER HEAD! ITS HUGE!"
I got separated, AGAIN <_<

I don't think her head in neccessarily big Cathryn. Maybe it looks that way because of the hair but it looks great. :)

It's the hair if anything, the head does not look that big anyway, looks fine.

Yea....i can't remember when i drew this, but i do remember having a conversation with my aunte about men's torso and how i draw them compared to how i used to draw them xD

I most likely drew this when i was drunk :|
Wasn't a BAD job considering i was most likely off my head.
Lololol. I'm a fag xD

I also found a female drawing in my bag when i came back loool, i drew a corset on her and that was it. I'M SO GOOD. :cunning:
But it was shit so i didn't bother to scan and upload it.
