District 9 was bloody amazing. It's part of my trifecta of perfect movies so far this year. Star Trek,District p, and Ponyo.
The last I watched in theaters was 9. 9 was pleasently dark and appealing to the eyes. The story could've been delved into a bit deeper, and it could've ben 30 minutes longer with a more dynamic ending, but it was still very enjoyable.

Just got back from watching Inglorious Bastards. The best Tarentino movie yet. (yes i know, its even better then Pulp Fiction.)
I proves that Tarentino is still a force to be reckoned with. It is a Masterpiece.
That was something wasn't it? I thought that image of Shosanna's face being projected onto the smoke in the movie theater is one of the great cinema climaxes. What an amazing job by Christoph Waltz, who plays The Jew Hunter. It's to the credit of Quentin Tarantino that he makes such provocative movies that divide audiences the way they do. So many great filmmakers today are wasting their time trying so hard to ingratiate themselves with the audience, but Tarantino doesn't give a fuck, Inglourious Basterds is mostly in German and French and subtitled into English, for those who haven't seen it, and it works wonderfully. It's been a smash at the box office too. No doubt due to FinalFantasy-XIII.net's assistance.

I saw State of Play, No Country For Old Men, and True Romance yesterday. I've seen No Country before, its a very good Coen Brothers effort, very suspenseful although not quite as good as their top level work, O Brother Where Art Thou, Millers Crossing and Fargo.
True Romance is a movie written by Quentin Tarantino but directed by Tony Scott and thats exactly how it plays out. Great performance by Patricia Arquette, and some amazing sequences, such as the "sicilian nigger" sequence and the wild ending shootout in which various plot threads all converge in a hotel room.
State of Play was ok. Middling performances by Russell Crowe and Rachael McAdams, and the newsroom dialog is too much of the same contrived "fast talk" you expect from such a setting. The story will keep you interested from beginning to end though.
I also saw Tarkovsky's debut movie on Friday, Ivan's Childhood, which has to be one of greatest war movies ever made. A 12 year old Nikolay Burlyaev probably in his greatest role(kind of like Christian Bale in Empire of the Sun) as an absolutely stone-hearted child soldier who is recruited by the Russian Underground because of his extraordinary ability to sneak behind enemy lines. As usual with Tarkovsky(who is most famous for his groundbreaking sci fi movie Solaris, which was eventually remade into garbage starring George Clooney 40 years later) the camera work and cinematography is astonishing.

Saw Raimi's The Evil Dead movie. I was in and out of sleep thru most of it. Stupid movie that isn't funny or scary.
I saw Observe and Report off PSN too. Now thats a real fucking movie. Seth Rogen fans have drawn the comparison to this being his Punch Drunk Love but I say fuck Punch Drunk Love. This is his Taxi Driver.
Also saw The Hills Have Eyes. It's a good movie. But I felt as if it was almost unnecessarily gruesome to the point of depravity. You don't put a bullet in a pretty girls skull unless you're conveying the realities of an important subject. To convey it so realistically in a moronic B movie simply for horrific kicks comes off as degenerate.
I can't say much for the glasses boy either. He looks like one of those herbs from the Apple commercials. I don't buy his heroism for a second.
In fear of having an entirely low-brow weekend, I re-watched Josef Von Sternberg's The Blue Angel, which remains one of my favorite movies. Marlene Dietrich gives the performance of her career as the exotic dancer of the title and Emil Jannings deserves special mention for blowing his nose better than anybody has blowed his nose in movie history.

Wow the last movie I saw was Ratatouille. My little sister watched it two days in a row. I kind of sat through the middle the first time around then the ending the next day.
I haven't been watching much movies lately but I did catch Superman/Batman: Public Enemies (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1398941/) the animated movie last week. It was ok. I was surprised when the credits rolled and recognized one of the voice actress' name. Allison Mack (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0532928/) BTA Chloe Sullivan (Smallville) who played the voice of PowerGirl. Oh and Reading Rainbow's LeVar Burton (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000996/) voiced Black Lightning. You'd be surprised how many well known actors/actresses do voice-over work for small productions. Robert Patrick (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001598/) voiced Hawkman which wasn't the first time.

I saw There Will Be Blood. I think Daniel Day-Lewis's performance was very good. The movie itself has beautiful cinematography, and is slower paced than most movies that come out, yet I did not find myself bored. The movie also has many moments where there is no speaking and the viewer is simply expected to get information from watching actions and expressions, mainly from Day-Lewis's nuanced character. The movie is quite depressing at times, and definitely left me with a bitter taste in my mouth which I think it was attempting to do. Its not the type of movie you'd watch again and again, but it is a well-crafted piece of cinema.

I saw Bright Star, A Serious Man, Tyson, Sunshine, Village of the Damned(original), and Terms of Endearment.
Bright Star, a movie about the great romance between John Keats(the poet laureate of the Romantic Era whose life, and success, was cut short because of his untimely death at the age of 25) and his first and only love with Frances Brawne. Great lead performances by Ben Whishaw and Abbie Cornish, who gives the best performance of her career. Admittedly, I don't know diddly squat about poetry, the only poem I've ever read was Edgar Allen Poe's "Ulalum", but surprisingly I found it very easy to get caught up in the poetic language of the film. Jane Campion remains a great director.
The movie of the weekend has to have been the Coen Brothers' A Serious Man. The Coen's follow up on their biggest commercial success(No Country For Old Men) with perhaps their most successful artistic triumph; a profoundly hilarious fable about a Jewish man looking for some answers. The content and style are far too rich and nuanced to summarize here.
Tyson is a documentary about Mike Tyson, in which the director James Tobak does everything in his power to make Tyson's harrowing life story a pretentious artsy religious purge. You could have stuck a camera in front of Tyson and he would have made the movie great on his own. He is surprisingly lucid and intelligent.
Sunshine is Danny Boyle's attempt at a serious sci fi movie. It has minor merits as a suspense film, but absolutely none as a science fiction movie. The science is absolutely idiotic and the cast could not be less believable in their roles as brilliant scientists out to save the Sun from dying. On a side note, this is the first film to my knowledge that focuses on the Sun as a subject for a film.
Not a hell of a lot to say about Village of the Damned that most of you don't already know. It's still very effective and one can't help but notice how literate horror movies used to be. If anything, it's a good illustrator of how far horror movies have fallen.
James L Brooks does a good job directing Terms of Endearment with even-handedness. Could have easily been far more sentimental than what it is. Shirley Mclaine, Debra Winger(who I suppose defines the "endearment" part of the title), Jack Nicholson and Jeff Daniels all give very good performances. The film won various Oscars, including Best Picture, and probably didn't deserve it, but the films that win almost never deserve it by my estimation.

I saw all 3 hours and 48 minutes of Lawrence of Arabia for the 35th time and I'm as certain as I was from the 5th time that it is the greatest movie ever made, if there is such a thing. Certainly, it is the greatest cast in movie history, by which I mean a fantastic list of actors working at their absolute best, including Peter O'Toole as Lawrence, which may very well be the single greatest performance in movie history, Alec Guiness(Obi Wan), Jack Hawkins(Ben Hur's fatherly figure), Anthony Quinn, Omar Sharif(Doctor Zhivago), Anthony Quayle and Claude Rains in two extremely memorable supporting roles. Exemplary job by the composer Maurice Jaurre and enough cannot be said by Britains greatest filmmaker David Lean, who was the greatest and most daring and influential director of epics that there has ever been. A true directors director.
My superlatives are unending for this unparalleled movie.

You gotta see the movie he did with director Nicholas Ray called "In a Lonely Place". Certainly one of his best performances. Also watch The African Queen and of course The Treasure of the Sierra Madre if you haven't already.
I don't know if I'll ever get to UP. Every time a new Pixar movie comes out, it gets these sparkling reviews and I always anticipate maybe feeling different about this movie than I did the last movie, and they always fucking suck. I can't stand those hymie movies, no offense. I just don't think a robot with a bra obscuring his eyes or shopping carts slamming him against a wall to be anything close to funny. Thats from Wall-E, but that pretty much sums up the nature of all their stupid movies.
O'Toole was certainly shafted by the Academy.
Apocalypto
I don't remember who said it, but someone once rightly said that the only list more prestigious than the list of people who won Oscars is the list of people who didn't. It isn't often in history that the Academy has awarded the best performances and best pictures. They did award Lawrence of Arabia for best picture and director. A lot of the awards they give out are for people they've previously shafted. Kinda like Denzel Washington with Training Day. They were essentially awarding him for Hurricane Carter.

Ugetsu. A haunting Japanese romantic ghost story. I hate to be one of those highbrow eggheads, but it absolutely puts to shame every modern Asian horror movie I've seen.
Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door. Concerns the true story of one of the most horrible reports of child abuse in American history. The most vile, revolting, shocking and artistic torture porn movie you'll ever see. Is it merely exploitative torture porn? Or does it qualify as art? The top notch performances suggest the latter, the clitoris burning and child rape suggests the former. You be the judge. I won't be watching this one again. Few things on this Earth can turn my stomach, but the visual representation, real or staged, of the abuse of young girls does make me sleep uneasily; The most flowery, innocent, chaste creatures on this planet.
