View Full Version : Existance

I sometimes think of some strange things while by myself. For example, how do I know that the world isn't some fabrication and that I am the only actual living thing? How do I know that even I exist? I may think, but that doesn't actually mean I am. What I think may not be thought, but rather I think I thought, if that makes any sense, and if I did not actually think, then therefore I do not exist. If I do not exist, then what do I? Then what am I if I don't exist? Maybe I exist because people remember that I exist, and if they all forget, I cease to exist. If a lone rock stands in a desert and has never been seen, does it exist? No one and nothing is aware it is there. Does it really exist? If a man is born where no one has ever been, and he is the only one aware of himself, does he truly exist? Maybe he only starts to exist when someone else sees him and can verify that he is in fact real.
Anyone else ever get weird thoughts like that?

Films like The Matrix and other films like it put thoughts like that in alot of peoples minds. Everyone always gets that feeling of life not being in their hands, that its contolled by someone else.
I dont know what to believe, so i just try and go about my life the best i can.

the matrix was kind of an eye opener......really made me question a few things -_-
this along with many other questions may never be answered
how do we know we exist??

God yes.
I found it strange when i questioned this because i started to doubt existance, its actualy a kind of weird feeling you get when to ask your self whether you exist or not, i thought about it and you kinda put yourself in a situation where you can answer it and you just get so confused.
It irritates me so.
But the problem you find yourself in is digging youself into a bigger hole of questions, you sit there and ask yourself and you can't get any answers.
Meh, life. It's a weird thing that cannot be questioned.
Thats how i came to a conclusion.

It's kinda stupid. Why should we wonder about what we can never understand? We know we can't understand it, but there are people who devote their whole lives to it.

I think I said this somewhere else but....We wonder why we exist and ask questions that we can never answer because of the fact that us, as humans, are always questioning things to better understand why we are here, what we were meant to do, why other things exist Etc.....and because we as humans beings want to know that we were born, made, brought here Etc. for a reason.
And for some people, the very thought of existence and other deep issues that we will never understand haunt them and they want to try and unravel the mysteryries that have consumed humans brains for centuries......

Maybe there are different universes, worlds, planets, and galaxies. And Earth possibly be the only place for living creatures, so wow, that's lots of people

I used to ponder that kind of thing when I was 7. Then I dropped it recently because at the end of the day, it doesn't matter to me. My existence is real to me and a lot of other people, so it shouldn't affect me much.
The real problem is, though, that there is no clear definition of existence. This question can never be answered until somebody decides to revise this bit of the English (and some other) language(s).
P.S. You spelt 'existence' incorrectly.

Gee sorry, I was tired. =/
You're starting to sound like Mr. Spraggs. Existence is as clear a definition as I need. How would you create a new word and define it clearer than existence already does? Even if a new word is created that miraculously describes, um, itself if all its fabulous clarity, you still can't answer this question. HOW CAN YOU BE SURE YOU EXIST?

How am I starting to sound like Mr. Spraggs?
Anyway, there is no truely universally accepted definition of existence. You even said yourself 'If a man is born where no one has ever been, and he is the only one aware of himself, does he truly exist?' whereas Google gives me several definitions completely contradicting that line of thought.
So it's kind of hard to figure out if you're existent when you don't know what 'existence' means.
P.S. Geez, don't lash out at me. I was only pointing something out. --;;
