To celebrate the 13th title in the world-renowned FINAL FANTASY series, Square Enix has undertaken a colossal project involving the development of various content for multiple platforms.
FABULA NOVA CRYSTALLIS, defined in Latin as "the new tale of the crystal," is made up of several different titles based on variations of the FINAL FANTASY XIII universe. However, while each title in the project features different characters, different worlds, and different stories, all are ultimately based on and expand upon a common mythos.
Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII were announced at E3 2006 to be part of Square-Enix's new Fabula Nova Crystallis compilation. The project is set to cost 100 billion yen which is twice as much as the Final Fantasy VII compilation, possibly because of the production costs on next generation consoles. Yoichi Wada stated that the compilation will last a decade.
Although only three titles have been announced, according to a diagram shown in a Square-Enix board meeting there are another three titles to be announced. No information is known about these titles unknown as of yet.

A patent for the title Final Fantasy Haeresis XIII was made by Square-Enix at the US Patent Office in May 2006. Although it isn't sure whether this title will actually be used, the patent hasn't yet been finilised. The USPO and Square-Enix is currently having a dispute over the descriptive word "Fantasy" when describing stories/books which they've registered for possible future use. |
